Shylock, the Jew, lived in Venice. He was a moneylender who had made a great for tune by lending money at very high interest to Christian merchants.
Shylock was very tough in business and he always took his payment. This made him unpopular with the men of Venice, and particularly with a young merchant named Antonio, who would lend money to people in  distress and would never charge interest. Shylock hated Antonio just as much.
Hs free loans cost Shylock business, and Antonio would often insult him  when they met in the Rialto and criticize him  for his hard deals. Although Shylock would listen with patience, he was secretly eager for revenge. Antonio was very kind to everyone else.

And we had not seen him for several years. We had been sitting in the dark, so Dupin got up to light the lamp. He sat down again without lighting it when the Prefect said that he had visited us for advice about some official business which was causing a lot of trouble.
