Lung cancer is the uncontrollable growth of abnormal cells, or a tumor, in the lungs. These cells topically line the air passages, which can sometimes make it difficult to breath. It is most commonly associated with smoking, which is a major carcinogen- meaning that it has a high possibility of giving you cancer(s), or other health issues. Lung cancer is a non-communicable disease, and therefore cannot spread to others.

Unfortunately, there are some aspects of developing lung cancer that are uncountable. For example, if your family has had history of lung cancer, you have a higher chance of having lung cancer.

Avoid Tobacco
Many people associate lung cancer with smoking or tobacco use. Smoking significantly hurts the lungs in more ways than one, and also . Although, smoking is entirely preventable. This can help prevent lung cancer.

Avoid Radon
Radon is a radioactive gas that is harmful to the lungs. It has been found in homes all over the United States, and comes from the natural breakdown of uranium in soil, rock, and water and gets into the air you breathe.

Eat a Healthy Diet
Eating a healthy diet can also help reduce the risk of lung cancer. Scientists and researchers have found evidence that suggests that eating a diet with higher amounts fruits and vegetables (the vitamins and nutrients in them), may help protect against lung cancer.

Some people who develop lung cancer do not show many or any clear risk factors. Although, scientists do know how to prevent most lung cancer cases.

Age/Gender/Cultural Groups that are Most Affected

Age
Most people who are diagnosed with lung cancer are over the age of 65. Only a small number of people are diagnosed under the age of 45. The average age of being diagnosed with lung cancer is 70.
Gender
Both men and women are at equal risk for lung cancer. Where gender does play a role is how doctors treat the patient- medically wise because males process and react differently than females, and vise versa. Statistically, the chances of surviving lung cancer are higher.
Cultural Groups
The cultural groups most affected by lung cancer are groups that tend to smoke more often than others or groups that have a history of lung problems. A study from the New England Journal of Medicine suggests that African Americans and native Hawaiians who smoke may be particularly vulnerable to lung cancer. Although, heavy smoking (more than 30 cigarettes a day) affects all cultural groups about equally.
