From then on, planes progressed and it became easier to reach far away places around the world. In 1927, in a grueling 33 hour flight, the Atlantic was crossed via aircraft for the first time ever. The man who achieved this feat was Charles Lindbergh and he was seen as a hero by many. This gave birth to a new industry which had an effect on many different aspects of life and government.

More info: http://www.wright-brothers.org/History_Wing/History_of_the_Airplane/History_of_the_Airplane_Intro/History_of_the_Airplane_Intro.htm

In 1919 the government made a constitutional amendment that prohibited drinking. Illegal manufacturers of alcohol (moonshiners) benefited greatly from this until the government started cracking down on them. In the south this intended to keep alcohol away from blacks and in the west it intended to decrease prostitution, crime, etc. This law didn't work well because the lawmakers overlooked the thirst that Americans had for alcohol and the fact that everyone was willing to disobey the law. Bad types of homemade alcohol started to rise. Some could even cause blindness or death but it satisfied the thirst and so it was commonly drunk. Hard alcohol also became more popular because it was more worth smuggling. As you can see, the prohibition experiment did not work.

More info: http://www.history.com/topics/prohibition
