"Charybdis in the Odyssey is one of the most remarkable creatures in The Odyssey." Odysseus encounters this creature twice in The Odyssey, narrowly escaping her both times. The first time is when Odysseus and his crew must go through a narrow strait that lyes between the narrow path between the two lairs of the monsters Charybdis and Scylla. From the advice of Circe, Odysseus decides to encounter Scylla instead of Charybdis in order to survive. This is not the last time Odysseus encounters this strait though; when Zeus destroys his crew's ship, Odysseus is able to survive on a small raft. This small raft takes him to Charybdis's lair. Here is able to narrowly escape by hanging onto a fig tree, and retrieves his raft from Charybdis when she "belched out the water" again.

Since Charybdis is a sea monster, it represents dangers no matter what direction you go, like a whirlpool. It would push water three times a day, with a force that could sink ships. It also gave expression of dangers when traveling on water and being stuck in unpleasant situations. Like the struggle of facing Charybdis, it also displays the courage to risk everything that is close to us.

It is said that Charybidis is a sea monster that once lived inside a rock. Every day, Charybidis swallows large amounts of water, then belching it out to create large whirlpools which could create damage to ships. There was a tale that said, Charybdis stole land from Zeus which got him upset so Zeus chained Charybdis to a sea-bed. "Charybdis was then cursed by the god and transformed into a hideous bladder of a monster, with flippers for arms and legs, and an uncontrollable thirst for the sea". Charybdis was once a pretty girl, until she disobeyed Zeus and got turned into a hideous sea monster. Now, Charybdis feeds into the ocean and uses the water to create damage to her enemies. Another tale was she stole cattle from Hercules so he struck lightning on her into the ocean, and now she is stuck in the ocean.
