The constant switching of perspectives in the narrative creates a more dramatic contrast between Werner's and Marie-Laure's characters. Werner's chapter are really heavy and have a gloomy atmosphere, whereas Marie-Laure's chapters are lighter and the setting creates a less stressful atmosphere. However, both characters are simply trying to survive through their different struggles on opposing sides of the war.

The letters from minor characters creates a more personalized view of the war, and puts their thoughts and feelings into perspective. While the letters show how Jutta and Werner are being censored, showing the control the Nazis have over Germans, they also emphasize the loneliness Marie feels over the loss of her father.

The novel's lack of chronological timeline complicates the reading experience by revealing pieces of information in pieces, rather than one full picture. For example, we do not learn who is in the house with Marie-Laure until the next section. This builds tension and suspense through the novel, as we are unsure about the intruder in Etienne's home. Through intentional but random storytelling, Doerr increases suspense, reveals plot points crypitcally, and untangles the narrative slowly, but methodically.

It enhances and challenges our reading experience because it makes us pay better attention to all of the different time periods and the quick switches between characters. It challenges us because it is hard to remember what happened so sometimes we may have to go back and look at the previous perspective when the perspective switches between characters occur so often.

The chapter lengths symbolize the impact of the situation described on the character. The longer the chapter, the larger the impact. For example, in the chapter, Plage du Mole, Marie-Laure leaves the house and walks with Madame Manec to the beach. At the beach, Marie feels some peace instead of rotting away thinking about her father. She finally breaks away from her depression and takes a big step forward. Furthermore in Nadel im Heuhaufen, Werner finally fixes the transmitters and tests them to see if they work. Werner shows his impressive abilities to the doctor and feels accomplished with his work. In both cases, the characters are able to escape their past troubles and for a moment feel on top of the world.
