I enjoyed the process of whittling/carving wood and the type of texture I could create with the knife. My decision to dry brush on the final layer really highlights the cut wood textures more. Captain Kina’s ship was struck by lightning. The lightning hit a particularly big barnacle that had been growing on the deck and it began to sizzle. Captain Kina noticed that the barnacle would grow slightly bigger each day. Gradually, the base of the barnacle which had completely hardened to the deck had now softened and started forming a pair of humanish legs. As the creature grew bigger and learnt how to talk, the captain and the crew agreed that they were a good luck charm from calypso so they accepted them as part of the crew. They named them ‘Cirri’ (which is what the tentacle part of barnacles are called). As Cirri got older they would stare longingly into the sea and ask annoying questions like where is my family? And what’s at the bottom of the sea? Captain Kina told them that one day they would reach the island of Ecklonia where there were others just like them.
This was a lie. In fact, the captain was actually planning to use the whole crew as a sacrifice in a ceremony that would grant them immortality. This ceremony had to be performed on the island. Once the crew docked at the island, Cirri and the crew could feel that something was off. At the seminar I mainly asked questions about the types of materials I could use for my 3D structure. I mentioned that I thought my plaster test wasn’t a very good outcome because the plaster still left an impression of the bandage grid. I also mentioned that I wanted the texture to be a lot more fleshy and lumpy, suiting the texture of abyss creatures more. Trying to focus on creating sounds that sound similar to a siren with an echo. I had a rough idea that as the creatures moved there would be a calmer sound and then when the siren sound would ring they would stop moving and then continue. I have only used GarageBand a few times so I am not completely confident in my ability to push my sound experiments fully. The way they take found objects and use them to create something new feels relevant to the way I am beginning to focus more on relics and fossils. The idea of using old materials to create new also links to my film inspiration ‘Prometheus’. I struggled a lot with creating the shapes and textures I wanted so I ultimately gave up and started brainstorming different materials I would be able to find and work with effectively in the remaining time. 
While working with the clay I had the idea of creating a creature similar to the trilobite fossils I had seen in the Horniman Museum and the Natural History Museum. Reflecting on this test, I think I should have created some of my own tools to make something closer to the appearance of a fossil.

I mentioned how I would like to redirect my focus onto the sensory aspects of the abyss and my tutor showed me ‘Dead Plants and Living Objects’ which I am feeling inspired by. 
I want to continue playing with materials, focusing on making some kind of delicate movement which matches the feelings of the slow moving abyss creatures. Overall, I found this quite complicated and too time consuming. I felt as though the process of creating movement was too unfamiliar to me as I am not experienced in programming and using circuit boards. I also began sketching ideas for my mascot which I would act as a symbol of my project as well as an way of experimenting with new materials.
So far, I have just been using large marker pens, coloured pencils or gouache which gives more attention to the textures that suit each structure. had both the ethereal element of the abyss as well as having smooth lines that gave the creature movement in a still image. I think this piece might be more striking if I had made it stand by itself. I also started to paint it dark red because I want to try having different layers to show that it is the remains of a creature.
