Draw and label a food chain containing at least one producer, two primary consumers, one secondary consumer, and a decomposer.

1. Start the lesson by having students tell you what they know of ecosystems by raising their hands before answering. This should take 2-3 minutes at most.

2. Then provide them with resources, such as paper and crayons, colored pencils, or markers, and ask them to draw a simple food chain with some labels if they can. Allow 5 minutes at most, though you should ask after the first few minutes to see if everyone is ready to move on.

3. Allow them to keep their food chains as they can use them later to see how much more they learned.

4. Once everyone is ready, play a short video on ecosystems to give them a brief understanding.

5. Afterwards, proceed with notes in anyway you wish. Try to make them short and to the point to make it easier and quicker for the students to follow along. Try to keep the notes to about 10 minutes or less if you can get away with it.

7. Have students take 10-15 minutes to play the Make a Mangrove game on school provided laptops.

8. Hand out supplies again and have your students draw a detailed food web this time. Make sure to tell them to see how much their knowledge has grown by having them compare the drawings from the beginning of the lesson to the one they just made. 5-10 minutes for this activity should be enough. Finally, pass out a short quiz to be completed and handed in for credit. I will be using the three student objectives other than the food web and food chain objectives as questions on the quiz.

9. If some students finish before the allotted time, then you may give them a specific food chain project to create. Have some specific biomes written down on scraps of paper for the student(s) to draw from. What ever biome they choose will be what they must create a food chain for, which will require them to choose only organisms from that specific biome.
10. They may also be given another ecosystem game to play from the pbskids website. http://pbskids.org/plumlanding/games/index.html
