Throughout the most dangerous game General Zaroff's words and speech show foreshadowing, on how the stay on the island will be for Rainsford like when General Zaroff and Rainsford are have dinner and Zaroff starts on speaking how hunting has become too easy, then he says "...'It must have courage, cunning, and, and above all, it must be able to reason.' 'But no animal can reason.' objected Rainsford" (Connel). Zaroff's speech shows how he believes that hunting humans is the only way to entertain himself. Also, the words and speech he uses shows he is clearly respectable and a gentleman from upper class wealth as stated.

In the most dangerous game General Zaroff's actions claim his sanity and his way of thinking. At first when Zaroff and Rainsford meet Zaroff shows his acknowledgement of Rainsford and the books he wrote. While Rainsford stays in the general's home he is treated with hospitality and respect. Whereas later once Zaroff introduces his hunting game he shows some insanity, and hints at his insanity. Once the game is started Zaroff traces Rainsford and finds him up in a tree, General Zaroff does not reveal that he knows he is there but implies it with his deadly smirk and obvious hints. Zaroff lets Rainsford go one time to allow for a better hunt, knowing that Rainsford will be the best game he finds.

Appearance

General Zaroff's appearance can contribute to situational irony. Since he is described as a "singularly handsome...tall man past middle age" (Connell 21), readers may believe that he won't be the antagonist. Unfortunately, we learn that he is a deranged man who likes to hunt humans. Additionally, General Zaroff has "high cheekbones, a sharp-cut nose, a spare, dark face, the face of a man used to giving orders, the face of an aristocrat" (21). From this description, a reader can presume that Zaroff is an ordinary, run-of-the-mill, civilized man who served in the army. As a plot twist, the reader soon finds out that he would be hunting our protagonist, Rainsford, as a game for his own pleasure and amusement. On page 29, Zaroff is found to be "dressed faultlessly in the tweeds of a country squire". Clearly, General Zaroff's appearance is quite prestigious. With this illustration of Zaroff, one can reason that he has a persona of a elaborate, wealthy man. His appearance that is mentioned throughout the story gives him credibility in hunting. From his demeanor and looks, the audience are more likely to see him as a threat to Rainsford during the hunt.

Although it is not clearly stated in the text, General Zaroff's thought process can be described as eccentric or completely insane. On page 24, Zaroff explains that "Hunting had ceased to be what you call a sporting proposition...I wanted the ideal animal to hunt...it must be able to reason". When Rainsford incredulously replies, "Hunting? Good God, General Zaroff, what you speak of is murder", General Zaroff "laughed with entire good nature" (25). Clearly Zaroff has a deranged way of thinking if he believes that he can possibly use people to hunt as a hobby. Additionally, Connell writes that "a smile spread over his [Zaroff's] brown face" (31) when he neared Rainsford's hiding spot during the hunt. Albeit Zaroff's thoughts aren't shared, we can guess that he is trying to toy with Rainsford. To conclude, Zaroff's thoughts and mindset is not completely the healthiest. He objectifies humans for his own enjoyment.

When readers are introduced to the character General Zaroff, they obtain an image of him as a well civilized gentleman. On page 21, it states, "Another man was coming down the broad marble steps, an erect, slender man in evening clothes. He advanced to Rainsford and held out his hand" (21). This quote shows Rainsford's first impression of the general. Breaking down the first sentence, erect means to be rigidly upright and to maintain a good posture. After making an appearance, the first thing Zaroff does is hold out his hand for a handshake, which is a universal sign of politeness. This shows General Zaroff's professional attitude. Continuing on, the quote mentions how he is wearing evening clothes, which typically are suits. Formal clothing further on proves him to being a gentleman. On the same page, the author describes Zaroff's appearance as "the face of a man used to giving orders, the face of an aristocrat" (21). An aristocrat is usually someone of high class who holds themselves with a level of nobility. The exact definition is, "the highest class in certain societies, especially those holding hereditary titles or offices" (dictionary.com). This furthermore backs up the claim of him being a chivalrous and courteous man. Rainsford's first thought of Zaroff is, "a most thoughtful and affable host, a true cosmopolite. But there was one small trait of the general's that made Rainsford uncomfortable" (22). This piece somewhat foreshadows that the story is going to change and leads up to the rising action. Fortunately, Rainsford was correct about his instincts and soon found out that the general hunts the human species for a mere act of pleasure. When Rainsford finds out this information on page 25, he tries to convince himself that it is a joke, but Zaroff assures him that he is serious. Zaroff says to Rainsford that he has three hours to run and hide before Zaroff will come to hunt him. The hunter plays with Rainsford's emotions when he finds the helpless man in the tree but instead of shooting, just smiles and moves on. This shows how the general feels that it was too easy for his capabilities and was willing to play a game that could potentially cost one's life.
