Careconnect Health Insurance Group Review: Beating the Winter Blues

Baby, it’s cold outside! Dark, too. And that lack of sunlight can leave you feeling sluggish, unmotivated, and even a little depressed, says clinical psychologist Curtis Reisinger, PhD, who is on staff at Northwell Health's nationally recognized behavioral health center, Zucker Hillside Hospital and is corporate director of Northwell Health's Employee Assistance Program.

In fact, this coming Monday—the third in January—is sometimes known as “Blue Monday,” and has been colloquially dubbed the “most depressing day of the year.” Of course, there’s no scientific basis to this designation, but most of us can all agree that Mondays can be rough. And dark, cold Mondays in January can indeed feel rougher than most.

But if you’re down in the dumps, you don’t have to stay there, Reisinger says. Making a few changes can boost your mood and energy levels, even in the depths of winter. The key moves to make:

1. Start your morning with bright light.

“If you can increase your light exposure in the morning, it can help wake you up out of the fog,” says Reisinger. Natural light is best, so if you can catch some early morning sunbeams through your window or squeeze in a quick walk before work, you may feel more alert throughout the morning. If that’s not possible, it can help to flick on some bright lights as soon as your alarm goes off.

Even something as simple as checking your email on your smartphone, watching the news on TV or looking at a computer screen can help wake you up, says Reisinger. “The blue light given off by electronics tends to shut off your production of melatonin, which is the hormone that makes you sleepy,” he says. (That’s also why you shouldn’t do these things within an hour of bedtime. In fact, shutting down these electronics a while before getting into bed can help keep your sleep/wake schedule on track, so you feel more lively during the day.)

2. Don’t slack on exercise.

“Anything that increases your metabolism is going to help you feel more alert, and that includes getting your heart rate up and your blood flowing with exercise,” says Reisinger. Physical activity can also release feel-good brain chemicals called endorphins. In fact, some studies have found that exercise can be as effective as medication at relieving mild depression.

3. Think about the root cause

Sometimes, a seasonal funk is a symptom of another problem, Reisinger says. “People who get depressed during the winter are often seasonal workers whose jobs disappear, or people who have to give up outdoor sports or whose whole lifestyle changes during the winter for some reason,” he says. It’s worth doing a gut-check to see if there might be this kind of underlying cause for your mood, because then you can start to think about finding a real solution.

On the other hand, if your mood takes a steep dive every winter, Reisinger recommends mentioning it to your doctor. It’s possible you have something called seasonal depression, also known as seasonal affective disorder (SAD); another possibility is that the lack of sunlight has triggered a circadian rhythm disorder, disrupting your sleep patterns and playing havoc with your emotions. In either case, seeing a psychologist or sleep specialist may help you feel better—without waiting until spring.

Careconnect Health Insurance Group Review: 5 Ways to Keep Your Child Smiling

What childhood illness is seven times more common than hay fever—and can set your child up for a lifetime of trouble?

Chances are, you didn’t think tooth decay. Few parents know that it’s the No. 1 chronic childhood illness, says Mary Hayes, DDS, a Chicago-based pediatric dentist and spokesperson for the American Dental Association. “Tooth decay is a quiet disease,” Hayes says. “It doesn’t make kids uncomfortable or sick until it gets really bad, so it often goes unnoticed.”

So in honor of National Children’s Dental Health Month, here are five keys to keeping your child’s smile bright and happy, now and as they grow.

Schedule a birthday dentist’s visit. The American Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends scheduling a first dentist visit within six months of when your child’s first tooth appears, and no later than his or her first birthday. Only one percent of babies meet this suggested milestone – yours should be one of them.

Don’t share utensils or “clean off” pacifiers in your mouth. Doing so can transfer cavity-causing bacteria from your mouth to your child’s. “Babies aren’t born with this bacteria, but they acquire it from their parents,” says Hayes.

Remember that even baby teeth need floss. “Flossing becomes important as soon as you have two teeth touching,” says Hayes. You can use floss holders or single-use plastic flosser devices on very young children to make the task easier.

If your water’s not fluoridated, ask about an Rx. About 70 percent of public water systems in New York State, including all of those in New York City’s five boroughs, provide fluoridated water, which has been shown to help prevent tooth decay (it’s especially protective when children are young and their enamel is still forming). But the majority of water on Long Island is not fluoridated, and if your home is served by private well water, it probably isn’t either. If your child’s not getting fluoride from drinking water, ask your dentist or pediatrician whether a prescription for fluoride pills or drops is recommended. And whether you have fluoridated water or not (you can find out here), your child should use a fluoride toothpaste as soon as he or she is old enough to use it without swallowing.

Don’t let young kids brush unsupervised. “Children generally don’t have the fine motor skills to do a good job brushing their teeth until they’re around 6 or 7,” says Hayes. “If your 5-year-old wants to brush himself, that’s great, but you can’t assume he’s getting everything clean.” It’s fine to let younger children practice brushing on their own. Just make sure you also take a turn, before or after they try it themselves.

Careconnect Health Insurance Group Review: Do You Drink More Than You Think?

There’s an old expression that all things are best in moderation, and that seems to be especially true for alcoholic beverages. Moderate drinking may even have some health benefits, like possibly lowering the risk of heart disease, diabetes and gallstones. But the key work in that sentence is moderate. Unfortunately, given how often alcohol is part of socializing, dining out and even professional networking, it’s all too easy for people to slide past responsible consumption into problem territory. So in honor of Alcohol Awareness Month, here’s a quick guide to moderate drinking. To your health!

What “moderate” means

The experts define moderate drinking as up to one drink a day for women and up to two drinks a day for men.

What “a drink” means

Of course, the above definition only applies if you’re pouring (or being poured) standard-sized drinks. One drink is equal to 12 ounces of regular beer – not the 16-ounce pint that bars often serve on draft. (If you have three pints in one sitting, you’ve actually consumed the equivalent of four drinks!) One drink is also equal to 5 ounces of wine, or 1-1/2 ounces of hard liquor.

How fast you drink counts, too

Researchers say that binge drinking is the main culprit in terms of chronic health problems, car accidents and other adverse consequences associated with alcohol. Binge drinking is defined as having more than three drinks in a two- to three-hour period if you’re a woman, or more than four drinks in the same time span if you’re a man.

The health benefits of talking

Concerned about your kids and alcohol? Talking can help keep them safe: Teens who talk with their parents about the dangers of drugs and alcohol are 50 percent less likely to use these substances illegally than those who don’t have such conversations.

What to do if you don’t like what you see

If you’re at all concerned about your drinking habits, know that you’re not alone: Approximately 17 million adults in the United States have a problem with alcohol, and the vast majority of them are not alcoholics. Support groups and a variety of treatment options can help. For more information and an easy self-assessment tool, check out the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism’s website Rethinking Drinking, or ask your doctor to recommend resources near you.
