The Sea06.12NatureProtect has a suction mechanism at the front that collects rubbish; if the rubbish is stuck to seaweed or animals, it releases them at the back. If the 20-square-metre area is clean, it makes a happy face and returns to the surface to soak up sunlight, which powers it via solar energy captured by the mini solar panel on top. If it’s a cloudy day, it uses percussion batteries to operate, which are activated by humidity in the air. Its wheels move upwards, generating upward thrust rather than forward thrust, causing it to return to the surface where it can also collect floating rubbish. Inside, it breaks down the rubbish and burns it, turning it into a liquid which is sent to the recycling centre to be reused in new spectacle frames, beads and other items.

The Sea06.12ProtectNature can operate autonomously, but it can also accommodate up to 25 people. Usually, when the Sea06.12ProtectNature heads out to the open sea, around 15 people go along to ensure the robot isn’t damaged and, if necessary, to call in a team for assistance. In case of damage, to prevent the rubbish from escaping, there is a net attached to two posts inside the machine; the net can hold up to 12kg of rubbish. The robot unloads the rubbish at the recycling centre every three days and can hold 15kg of rubbish; when it can no longer hold any more, the Sea06.12ProtectNature follows its route

The Engineering & Design Process (Step-by-Step)

* Phase 1: Problem Identification

Students initiated the project by researching deep-sea pollution and identifying the urgent need for a solution to collect waste from fragile marine ecosystems.

* Phase 2: Concept & Biomimicry Development

Inspired by the natural adaptation of the deep-sea anglerfish, students sketched the initial concept, blending biomimetic features with a durable, mechanical design to withstand intense underwater pressure.

* Phase 3: Mechanical Engineering

The team designed the structural body using corrosion-resistant materials, integrating a reinforced debris intake system, a clockwork sorting mechanism, and high-efficiency propulsion drives for precise underwater mobility.

* Phase 4: Software & AI Integration

Students programmed the robot's core systems, installing a Visual AI camera and coding smart algorithms to allow the vehicle to identify artificial waste and navigate autonomously.

* Phase 5: Prototyping & Testing

After rigorous testing in controlled pool environments to calibrate the flotation and suction balance, the final functional deep-sea cleaning unit was successfully completed.
