Mary Mackillop was born January 15th 1842 in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia and died August 8th 1909 in North Sydney, NSW, Australia. She was a schoolteacher nun who then became a saint because she taught those who were being left behind including bush kids, girls, the homeless and the poor. In the 1800s education was a privilege for the privileged. Mackillop saw it as essential for all. She nearly covered all of Australia with schools. Wherever there were children needing teaching, she sent her teachers. Their living conditions were often rough, way out in the hot and arid inland of the country but, through belief and determination, they gave that precious foundation of learning without discrimination. Many of Mary Mackillop’s schools continue today, as do her Josephite order of nuns.

Mary has done this by helping the unprivileged including bush kids, homeless and poor to be schooled for no cost by sending her teachers to rural areas to teach the kids. She also quoted from the Good Samaritan ‘courage, trust in God who helps you in all thing’ Mary Mackillop 1874.

Rerum Novarum is an encyclical issued by Pope Leo XIII on 15 May 1891. It was an open letter, passed to all Catholic patriarchs, primates, archbishops and bishops, that addressed the condition of the working classes. Pope Leo XIII wrote, ‘The poor must be speedily and fittingly cared for since the great majority of them live undeservedly in miserable and wretched conditions’. So Mary then wrote, ‘If the choice is given, seek first the most neglected places … it is to those we should desire to go’. The Pope and Mary were both aware of the poor and their conditions, so, the Rerum Novarum inspired Mary to start teaching the unprivileged.

She went through suffering by her Job, faith and trust were being tested to the ultimate degree by God. She spent time in prayer by telling God what she was going to do.

Prophetic Role - Mary spread the word about Jesus by opening schools for the poor. She had to accept that people will judge her for opening a school for the poor, bush kids and the homeless.

Kingly Role – She used her power by founding the Josephites which is an order of nuns. With the nuns she promoted equality and schooled the unprivileged.
