The story begins with us meeting Jonas and the ceremony of the twelve. We are then taken on his journey of learning to become to the next "Giver". He begins to learn of all the things his community does not have. He learns about the good things such as snow, and sunshine. But he is also forced to learn about the bad things in life such as war. He decides after a year that he can not keep staying in the community, he decides to leave with his "baby brother" named Gave.

The Giver's setting is in a place called the community. It is an isolated place where all is controlled, from the people to the weather. Everybody is managed from the moment they are born until they die.

Tone

The tone of book is a mix of mysterious and suspenseful. Almost everything we learn we learn we do with Jonas. When he begins his journey to leave the community we are waiting anxiously for chapters to see if him and Gabe will make it out alive. They have to pass through several guards, buildings, and make sure they aren't seen by the planes flying over the forest.

Mood

The book begins very warmly, it shows us a normal morning for a nice family. Everything is done in an orderly fashion which gives us a feeling of safeness. It later shifts into a more dangerous mood. Jonas finds things out and plans to escape the community.

Characteristics of Jonas

Jonas is an intelligent and thoughtful kid. He always thinks about how things work in the community even if they sometimes confuse him. Later on in the story, he becomes brave and independent. One example of this is when he makes difficult decisions even though some of them can come with big risks that could possibly end his life.

Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen

This song reminds me of when Jonas was leaving the community. It felt like he was being saved and this song came to mind.

2nd song

Believer by Imagine Dragons

When I think of Jonas's personal growth; this song reminds me of it. He begins to learn more about the community and the reality.

3rd song

Man in the Mirror by Michael Jackson

This song to me shows when Jonas realizes he must leave the society for him to live out his life and not be controlled.

This quote sticks with me because we all feel like this at some point in our lives. Sometimes we can't put our feelings into words but this describes it perfectly.

"When people have the freedom to choose, they choose wrong." pg 126

This shows how the community is, they brainwash you into thinking this. In my opinion, there are no wrong choices we might choose an option that is not the best, but we shouldn't live without making choices it's part of life.

"It's just that... without the memories, it's all meaningless." pg 55

This quote shows how important memories are to us humans. We are nobody without memories, they shape who we are.
