Hindu and Muslims in India

Hinduism- Hindus are polytheistic with a belief of one supreme deity, and believe in the cycles of the earth(i.e. reincarnation). Hindus also believe in karma, and practice tolerance and understanding. Gandhi used Hinduism as the driving force for nationalism behind the the Indian Independence movement.

Muslims- Muslims are monotheistic and believe in Allah, a supreme being that is the only creator, and the only being to be worshipped. Muslims believe in innocence of mankind at birth, and that all people are equal in the eyes of Allah. They believe that forgiveness is always possible through prayer. There are five pillars in the Muslim religion; Testify, Prayer, Fasting, Charity, and Pilgrimage.

The Islam and Hindu religions had many influences-both religious and cultural- on each other after Muslims settled in the predominantly Hindu society of India. A drawback of this merge was the increase of child marriages of Hindu girls to Muslims with high positions in the Hindu caste system. Hinduism also beared a heavy influence on the Muslim religion, resulting in Muslim casteism. The philosophy of Sufism was born in the Islam religion as a result of Hindu influence. Sufism supported universal brotherhood and union of people under god. The Urdu language was born as a result of the two religions in the same country of India. Cultural aspects of India like music, art, and food were also molded by both religions in India.

"God has created different faiths just as He has the votaries thereof. How can I
even secretly harbor the thought that my neighbor’s faith is inferior to mine
and wish that he should give up his faith and embrace mine? As a true and loyal
friend, I can only wish and pray that he may live and grow perfect in his own
faith. In God’s houses there are many mansions and they are equally holy."

Gandhi believes in tolerance of all religions in his country. He believes that muslims and Hindu people are equal in India, and that all religions were made by God so they are all equally holy.
