In today's world this is "coded" differently by parents wanting a "safe environment" for their children. While in certain areas there may be validity to this reason, it is generally viewed that independent schools are elite from race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic points of view. This is especially the case for schools who are tuition driven and may not have the resources to provide aid to increase diversity. While progress has been made in these areas, it is clear that as DEIB work advances in these schools, pushback is increasing from white families. How do we engage the community at large to help everyone feel equal and at the table? Just recently at our school, when one group seemed to be receiving more attention, several other groups complained and created issues so this is a very real issue we have to deal with.
