Settlers were not treated well because the people that were already in California thought of the land as gold mines and as their territory so they wouldn't like when more people came.  Settlers started to dam off rivers to drain all water to find gold and people would kill each other for gold because it was worth a lot. The population of California was growing at a very fast rate because everyone wanted a chance to become wealthy.
