I am an internal medicine hospitalist and have been caring for COVID patients at their bedside for the last 17 months. From personal experience and literature review, the delta strain is significantly more contagious than anything we have seen before even at the peak of our shutdown and mitigation measures. We are seeing young healthy patients become critically ill and some survive with chronic deficits from stroke, weakened heart function and chronic lung disease/ oxygen dependent. We are also seeing a shortage of beds and staff to care for these patients which can impact best care and outcomes. 

Without perfect mitigation measures in the classroom including universal masking, distancing, hygiene and air scrubbers, this virus will spread in the classroom setting. Unfortunately due to our government’s veto on mask mandates, PISD will be unable to provide this environment for our kids especially with full classrooms where social distancing will be poorer than when we dealt with a less communicable virus unless we have a virtual option. The Covid 19 delta strain behaves like an airborne illness like measles (which can infect upto 9 out of 10 close contacts) and not a droplet borne illness like the flu which is better blocked by masks. We wear n95 masks and eye covering, gown, gloves to care for Covid patients. Our kids will be sitting in a partly masked classroom with reduced distancing measures. 

We are looking at significant classroom spread as seen by Garland isd when they opened with only an in person option. DISD is considering virtual schooling too. Per PISD’s own safety guidelines, level 4 which equals facility closure is 2 or more linked cases with ongoing spread. We will be there very soon with this virus. It would be in PISD’s interest to electively allow virtual schooling for those who want it until our kids are fully vaccinated. This way the district can focus on mitigation measures with a reduced number of in person students and reduce spread. Intermittent facility closures will be more chaotic and disruptive to families especially those who want in person learning.

Covid 19 pediatric hospitalizations have doubled over the last 4 weeks. Our hospitals are filling up before our winter virus season. Let’s not put our kids at risk for avoidable infection with potential long term complications and at risk for suboptimal care due to lack of resources. 

PISD board, I am confident if you choose to we can come up with creative ways to educate our kids safely and virtually. Let’s not allow short term financial considerations to impact the long term well being of our kids and erode trust in the district. You will lose enrollment and also see some kids lagging when they reenroll and this will impact state/ standardized testing scores for the district. Better to be proactive and come up with a short term virtual plan as Frisco and many other districts have done already.
