I frequently reference the students' personal experiences in my lessons and even my own, and share those at the beginning of a lesson or a unit. I ask them what they know, what they want to know, and what they have learned and utilize that information going forward. Using visuals and videos help them understand and connect their experiences to the lesson we are learning.

Student-"My mom said all people besides white people were treated badly, is it true that you can't use the same bathroom?"

Opens a discussion and later other students answer with additional questions and what they have heard.

The warm-up either ties in directly with content we have been discussing recently as a way for the students to review what we have covered so far; or the warm-up ties in with the real world/students' personal lives.

I have found visuals help tremendously, once they see a picture it almost always makes a connection. We were once doing a math lesson about cheddar cheese and cottage and students were very apathetic. I brought up a picture of each and they instantly were engaged, discussing how they loved/hated cottage cheese:) it was much easier to t each after that.

I am fortunate that I know some things about students that speak Spanish so I am able to start a lesson and ask the kids about their experiences. When I taught Spanish, I was talking about holidays in the Hispanic world. The Spanish speakers in the classroom were able to share their own stories about the holidays and what their families do for the holidays.
