Culturally responsive teaching is a teaching method in which there is deliberate inclusion of students’ cultures in the everyday learning experiences. Utilizing culturally responsive teaching, you will incorporate your students familial backgrounds and everyday lives in your classroom creating a more comfortable and supportive environment for them to learn in.

https://ncte.org/blog/2018/01/culturally-responsive-teaching-todays-classrooms/

Why is it Important?

You will be creating a learning environment that embraces all students and their various backgrounds. By acknowledging the students’ various experiences outside the classrooms, you validate that they are capable and smart. Due to either language or language issues many students are incorrectly referred to Special Education, when in fact the student’s intelligence and capability are not the issue, but instead the curriculum is. By correctly assessing the students who only need curriculum changed, Special Education resources won’t be unnecessarily used, and the students will be more confident and ready to learn due to feeling accepted in the classroom.

Know Your Students

Learn all that you can about your students by asking questions, speaking to their parents, read books, watch movies, or listen to music about their cultures. Find out about their families. There is a possibility that the profession that a parent or family member was before they came to America could be useful in a lesson, and you could invite them as a guest speaker for the class. Learning more about you students can help you properly incorporate elements into your classroom that can make learning easier for them. For example having ESL students, it could be beneficial to have posters in your classroom that display the same information in more than one language.

https://www.nationalequityproject.org/blog/5-ways-to-create-a-culturally-responsive-classroom
https://ncte.org/blog/2018/01/culturally-responsive-teaching-todays-classrooms/

Ways to Make Students More Comfortable

There are many ways to make culturally diverse students more comfortable in the classroom.

1. Name pronunciation – a name is a part of someone’s identity. Make sure to take the time to ask what your student prefers to be called and how to pronounce their name correctly. Even if it takes time to get the pronunciation correct, practice.

2. Learn a few words in students native languages – Learning something as simple as “Hello” in different languages. A simple greeting in their native language can make them more comfortable in the classroom.

https://www.nationalequityproject.org/blog/5-ways-to-create-a-culturally-responsive-classroom

In addition to the "All About Me" paper, I would send home a "This is My Culture" paper as well. I believe a paper such as this can bring familiarity and comfort to the classroom so that we can celebrate each others cultures without being dismissive due to lack of knowledge. If I had a class where there were few students that were culturally diverse, I would give the students an assignment to research other cultures and give a presentation on the interesting and cool facts they discovered. I would encourage my class to learn as much about others as they can so that everyone would feel accepted in my classroom.

There are different ways I will be implementing culturally responsive teaching in my future classroom. Displayed in my classroom I plan on displaying multi-lingual posters. On the first day of class, I will introduce myself to the class and ask that each student introduce themselves stating the name they prefer to go by and if it is ever mispronounced what is the correct way to say it. I will share my own mispronunciation of my first name, informing that I was called "cee-rah" for years by my sister and "Sarah" by the high school secretary over the school intercom, every time I was called to the office.
If I have any ESL students, I could greet my students “Buenos Dias, clase.”, change an attention getter to “Oye, Oye, Oye” with the class responding “Si, Si, Si.”

At the end of that first day, I will distribute and send home an “All About Me” paper to be filled out. I will have the students fill out their “All About Me” paper at home, return it to school and have an assigned “Share Day”. On their assigned day they will bring a favorite item, cool fact about them, neat share about their family, and share what they hope happens for them this school year.
