This painting, of a woman in a cafe, which looks a lot like a bar, reflects the setting of “Crime and Punishment.” The background of the painting looks hazy and smoke filled, and the woman also has a glass, with presumably alcohol contained inside. In my book, the main character walks past several bars filled with poor and broken people. He even goes into one, meeting a miserable and reckless former government official, whose family life is… undesirable. Most of the plot up until now revolves around bars and drinking, both in the character’s life and his dream. The painting, while not showing anything as despicable as the book, does portray the mood and atmosphere of the bars in the book.

This news article is about Russia, and how many people are turning against the government due to increasing poverty, rising prices, and a stagnant economy. This situation is reflected in the book because every place that has been shown so far is covered in poverty. The main character can’t even afford bread to eat, and malnutrition and joblessness are everywhere. Yet while most of the ordinary people have nothing, the government workers, like lawyers and police, are well off, and don’t have such worries. It is an ironic comparison between the news article and book since they both take place in Russia, and they are both faced with poverty and a poor economy.

Robin Hood is a well known and classic character. In his story, he goes about with his band of merry men, and sets out to take from the rich nobles and give back to the poor peasants. This relates to Raskolnikov’s motivation for planning a murder. Raskolnikov has been going back and forth in his head between going through with a murder, or not and letting his life continue to go down hill. He knows an old, rich, and horrible woman that allows people to sell and pawn valuable items to her. She abuses her sister that lives with her, and no one really likes her. Raskolikov has decided to kill her in order to take her hoarded valuables, and give them to the poor like him and his family that need it desperately. Robin Hood, while a much more light hearted story, brings about the same principle of taking from the rich and selfish, and giving to the poor and generous as seen in “Crime and Punishment.”

“The Railroad” is a poem that reflects the hardships taken in Russia by the peasants, sacrificed by the thousands, in order to build and grow Russia. It focuses on the injustices taken upon the peasants by the rich, and the terrible conditions they worked through, such as cold and hunger, in order to build the railroad. It also contrasts to how things are currently (when the poem was written) and how more wealthy immigrants are treated better, and now work off of the things the peasants built. In “Crime and Punishment” it shows the same theme, focussing on the crime and poverty experienced by the lower Russian class around the same time that the poem was written. It also shows how the rich benefit from it all, and how the harsh conditions experienced by the majority aren’t even noticed. The two relate a lot to each other in describing the toil and death faced by lower classes, and the immunity of the rich in Russian society to problems.

The main character of Code Geass, Lelouch Lamperouge, relates to the main character of Crime and Punishment. Both have a motive to do good, yet their circumstances lead them to try to accomplish that goal through violence. Raskolnikov wants to help people like himself out of poverty, and decides on murdering a selfish pawn shop owner and stealing her valuables to give to others. Lelouch plans at first to make a gentler world where his sister can live without fear, yet throughout the show, his objective changes to free Japan, and then again to create world peace. However, his actions lead him to make the choice to go to war, from terrorism to open leading conflict between global superpowers. However, the difference between the two is that Raskolnikov’s plan is flawed from the beginning, and no one benefits. Lelouch on the other hand ultimately succeeded in creating world peace. (I highly recommend this show)
