UNICEF is a politically significant organization because it protects the rights of children by giving them access to all the basic necessities for survival and additional aid in in the prospect of a better future. This organization had worked all over the world improving the conditions that children live in. One of their main focuses is child development and education. I believe every child should have the right to education, even the most disadvantaged. This is because education plays a vital role in breaking the cycle of poverty, supporting children in the process of survival, growing, developing and improve their overall well-being. In addition, the organization focuses on ensuring safety to all children and ending unequal opportunities for different statuses. UNICEF’s work is based in 192 countries, reaching many people who are underprivileged and leaving behind a trail of lasting impacts. Due to this organization’s programs, children around the world including Canada have a chance at a successful future with the same rights as any other person. They strongly believe in human rights and are taking action everyday to improve the lives of others, making worldwide communities a better place.

United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) was created in December 1946 by the United Nations to provide food, clothing and health care to European children. During that period of time, many children suffered from famine and spread of diseases following the aftermath of World War II. In 1953, UNICEF was recognized for its efforts and the UN decided for this organization to remain a permanent one. In the following years, UNICEF began a successful global campaign against a disfiguring disease called ‘yaws’ which affected millions of children, and could be cured with penicillin. Although UNICEF was first established to aid children after the war, it grew into a large organization that adopted principles in support of children and continues to successfully help many individuals around the world. Its mission is simple - to promote the well-beings of children worldwide but it wasn’t until 1961 that education became another key target goal.

Education is a special privilege that only some get to experience. UNICEF’s aim is to close the gap between social inequality and ensure that all children of education regardless to their gender, ethnicity, social status, or circumstances are given the right to education. The key areas of their priority include advocating for child development, education, and the rights for survival. UNICEF has the influence to work at the global level with all governments in support of the world’s children. This humanitarian organization works in more countries and saves more children’s lives than any other organization. Working in almost every country in the world, UNICEF positively influences the regional, national and local levels of 192 countries to improve millions of lives.

In order to meet the goal of giving today's children the privilege of education and other child rights, UNICEF has come up with different solutions. UNICEF aims to ensure that children have access to early childhood development, care and pre-primary education so that they are ready for primary education by 2030. For a more immediate impact, UNICEF offers all the money collected from their online store to give children access to education and learning tools. The organization is currently in the process of increasing the number of early learning policies and programs in the world in addition to building education facilities that are child, disability, gender sensitive and provide safe, inclusive and effective learning environment. They currently have over 600 education staff in 155 countries which bring change to millions everyday.

UNICEF makes a big difference in our world on a daily basis, allowing many people to access education and helping the most disadvantaged. In 2014, UNICEF supported an estimated 8.6 million children in humanitarian situations to access basic education. From 1990 to 2011, the early childhood education enrolment increased from 33% to 50%. Not to mention in the same year, UNICEF provided learning materials to over 16.3 million children, supported 52 countries to develop and implement policies on inclusive education. The organization’s efforts have not gone unnoticed and much change is being done for the better. Their efforts in providing and promoting child-friendly schools has led to 10 additional countries implementing new standards. Furthermore, the multilingual-intercultural education programs have benefitted more than 4,200 students in indigenous communities and more than 835,000 individuals in 40 countries are benefiting from UNICEF’s education programs. As you can collect from the data, many policies and programs have changed over the years that give more and more people the opportunity of a better future. Although UNICEF cannot help everyone overnight, as a result of the actions taken, many things have changed rather than stay the same.
