Greta Thunberg is a young female environmental activist working to fight the issues of climate change around the world. Her hard work and passion to help put a stop to climate change. She is heard as she gives speeches and participates in protests to help support this cause. She is one of the youngest people to do this, therefore uniting and representing the younger generations as a voice and leader. Greta is someone they can trust and rely on to do what's right. Has an authoritative girl standing up for what she truly believes in. In an interview with The Straits Times Greta's father, Svante talks about Greta before her activism and how much she's overcome and changed because of it. He says " now she's just like any other you think she's not ordinary now because she's special and she's very famous and all these things but to me, she's now an ordinary child she can do all the things like other people can and I see she's happy." From her father's inside perspective it is clear that without her activism Greta would not be the same, it has turned her from a shy, sheltered girl to a confident, go-getting young adult.

Greta, 19 years old from Sweden, suffers from Asperger's syndrome. A developmental disorder related to autism is characterized by above-average intellectual abilities as well as impaired social skills. She was born on January 3rd, 2003, and began her activism at the age of 15 when she first decided to change her way of living to be more carbon friendly. Ever since then has been motivating people around the world to take action and help save the plant. She was first seen in the public eye after protesting outside of the Swedish parliament in 2018 for the government to meet carbon emissions targets. She is now one of the world's wealthiest climate activists and with a net worth of 1 million dollars.

Greta began her activism when she first decided she wanted to change her lifestyle to create a smaller carbon footprint. Greta says she is influenced by rosa parks. She claims that Rosa taught her that just one person can make such a difference in the world and it encouraged her to do the same. In addition, she felt like she could relate to Parks because they both were introverts. Today Greta is inspired by her true passion for the earth and wants to do anything she possibly can to save it and help put an end to climate change.

Claim : "For more than 30 years, the science has been crystal clear."

Evidence : "The popular idea of cutting our emissions in half in 10 years only gives us a 50% chance of staying below 1.5 degrees [Celsius], and the risk of setting off irreversible chain reactions beyond human control.”

Greta uses factual data to support her claim this not only adds to her credibility but because she is using real numbers it will hopefully evoke a sense of urgency in the audience.

Commentary : "How dare you continue to look away and come here saying that you're doing enough, when the politics and solutions needed are still nowhere in sight."

Greta is very brutally honest when talking about environmental issues. This helps her get her point across and have people take her seriously as well as the problem of climate change. As such a young activist she must assert her authority.

We must lay the foundation while we may not know exactly how to build the ceiling.”

Evidence: "Humans are very adaptable: we can still fix this. But the opportunity to do so will not last for long. We must start today. We have no more excuses."

Greta makes a more general statement here, but it still acts as evidence because it is adding to her claim and supporting how people will have to come together to help climate change from getting much worse.

Commentary: "We children are not sacrificing our education and our childhood for you to tell us what you consider is politically possible in the society that you have created."

Greta's commentary helps build her character, as the audience can see a more personal side of her. Not only that but it also unites the younger generations making sure its evident to them that they matter and can help make a difference.

She uses her personal experiences as a kid but also the patterns are seen in the present-day to defend her claim.

Commentary : Greta uses emotion in her voice as she gives her opinion of how our leaders have dismissed current day climate issues, this helps show her true beliefs and her being vulnerable will make it easier to support/sympathize with her cause, as well as its seriousness.

Methods of development

Greta uses various methods of development including attentive diction, narration, and compare and contrast to construct her arguments. All three of these things play a crucial role in creating a strong argument. In one of her speeches, she talks about the effect climate change will have on future generations and begins by saying "In the year 2030 I will be 26 years old. My little sister Beata will be 23. Just like many of your own children or grandchildren. That is a great age, we have been told. When you have all of your life ahead of you. But I am not so sure it will be that great for us." Greta is using narration to tell a story of how she believes climate change will affect all. It helps people understand how the climate crisis will not only affect people now but also our future, and this will unite people to hopefully work together to make a change. If it weren't for her use of narration this message wouldn't be so clearly given to the audience. An example of Greta using the method of comparison and contrast is when she talks about how our leaders today have failed us and says "How dare you pretend that this can be solved with just 'business as usual' and some technical solutions?". She compares and contrasts finding a solution to climate change as "business" because the leaders today are more focused/worried about economical growth rather than the well-being of the earth. This is a great approach because it allows the audience to think of the leaders (who Greta paints as villains) in a new way, where you can see their true colors and what's wrong with what there doing. This method allows her to illuminate her ideas directly. Lastly, Greta uses attentive diction throughout her speeches. For instance, in her Global North Greenwash Festival speech, she uses the words “shameful” “radical” and “Can’t accept the truth”. These words all help build her argument as well as help her develop her character for her audience so that she is taken seriously. Not only that but the issue of the climate crisis is very pressing so it is crucial she uses this strong diction to express that. Overall each method of development Greta uses is necessary because they all help add to her argument being well rounded and strong.
