This teacher sat behind her desk the three hours I was in her class. 7th- She used a projector to have the image so the kids could see what she was writing down. The students spent more time talking then coping down notes.
8th- This class was assigned a chapter test when they walked in. The teacher told them they could use their notes for the previous week if they had them. Most of the students were struggling to find them, but eventually found them. There were some older students who came in to ask for help in another area and the teacher sent most of the hour trying to help them get some club information filled out, so the students were not able to get much assistance on the test.

The day I observed the teacher was taking her classes to the computer lab to finish typing their research papers. They had chosen a topic that went along with the holocaust and had to type up the information they had found. Each student had a collection of notecards that they had typed up to use for the report.

One thing I learned in my observation was that when teaching this age group, the teacher should stand in front of the class to teach. The students took advantage of a teacher setting behind a desk to teach. They were continually talking and were not paying attention to what she was teaching.

With this age group, the students seem to interact with the teacher more. There is more joking and laughter going on. I feel teachers with older kids need to have a sense or humor, but also need to be able to keep control in the classroom. Having a sense of humor helps the students connect with the teacher.

The 6th graders in our district go to the elementary school. Our 6th graders are the "leaders" of the building. many of them are assigned to teachers to help them make copies, work with students or other things they need done before school. The 6th graders also do a weekly school wide assembly to let the students know what is going on each week.

I felt the school's atmosphere was pretty laid back. Students were walking the halls before the first bell rang with their friends. They all came to class pretty fast once the bells rang and for the most part sat down in class quickly and quietly.

I noticed that all teachers had expectations that involved coming into the class and setting down quickly and quietly. I will be sure to make it a point to let my students know what I expect form them as students and what they can expect from me as a teacher.
