I think that the metaphor your deeds are your monuments means that all of your deeds are "set in stone" no matter what you do. So make good choices because if you do not that leaves a forever mark in your heart. You want to make good memories not bad ones.

I think that it is talking about kindness again, but in a different way. I think it means you don't need to worry about how you look, how many friends you have, or anything about your looks or appearance at all. It means that what you do to make the world... what it is may just be the only thing that matters. To put it another way, the deeds you make in the past determine what will become your future. Not your looks or popularity. For example, let me use Julian. Julian has been shown as a mean, rude kid who teases others. It may come back at him, or it could make him a worse person whom nobody likes. But Jack Will on the other hand has been only nice to August, which means hopefully that others will do good back to him, and build him up as a better person. This is a great thing for Auggie to hear because it is all about the fact that appearances don't matter. It seems to Auggie that appearances do matter, but maybe this can show him that changing himself just so that other kids will like him is something he doesn't need to do. He needs to be nice and kind, and his future life will pay it forward. If he thinks about the way he looks to much, that becomes his monument, and it pushes him to become someone who OBSESSES over looks, and he will loose the chance to become the nice caring adult that we all wish he will become.
