- Runoff is water that moves that moves from/over land and eventually enters the oceans.
- Runoff can carry pesticides and fertilizers from farms, and oil, and gasoline that spilled onto roads from the cites.
- Fertilizers can add nutrients to water and cause oxygen levels to drop=fish dying.
Example: A farmer is planting some plants near a river and and thunderstorm comes in and floods the farm and carries the fertilizer to the river and then the river carries the fertilizer to the ocean, and then the fish eat it and die.

- Occurs when the rate of fishing is greater than the rate of reproduction in an area.
- Can cause a population to disappear
- Can force humans to find alternate food sources.
- Can cause jobs to decrease and food starvation to increase!
- Overharvesting effects all organisms in a given food web.
Example: the Bluefin Tuna is the most overharvested fish in the world, therefore the population is decreasing rapidly.

-Human awareness is when people know what is going on around the world and if people know that fish could go extinct then they might do something
- it benefits the human population by helping the fish repopulate and that means more food.
- it benefits oceans by having more fish and fish our prey to other creatures
- we are examples of human awareness because by knowing and helping we could make a big impact in the future

-Bycatch is the unwanted fish and other marine creatures caught during commercial fishing for a different species.
- Bycatch occurs because modern fishing gear is very efficient, often covers an extensive area, and can be highly unselective—it catches not only the target species but many other marine animals as well.
- Fishermen throw the marine animals that they don't want back into the ocean even though they are dead
Example: A fisherman is trying to catch a lot of shrimp, but they catch a turtle with it, and just leave it to die.
