The strategy by Candyce Nelson, MSID, from Saint Leo University, invites students to use AI as a realistic stakeholder, such as a client, patient, auditor, or supervisor. Instead of responding to a static case study, students interact with the AI persona, ask questions, test ideas, receive feedback, and revise their thinking.

Student interaction with ChatGPT can promote complex critical thinking skills

This study examined correlations between attitudes toward AI, trust in ChatGPT, engagement with ChatGPT, and knowledge or experience with ChatGPT. University students who reported more positive attitudes toward AI and greater trust in ChatGPT also reported more knowledge of and engagement with ChatGPT. Engagement, in turn, was the strongest predictor of critical thinking performance, assessed with a reasoning performance test. Knowledge and experience with ChatGPT were also positively related to critical thinking performance, but less strongly. In their interpretation, the authors argue that active engagement with ChatGPT, rather than passive or superficial use, may support the development of complex critical thinking skills, rather than eroding or blocking the development of those skills.
