Although I first I thought her comments were unnecessary and kind of annoying , her comments turned out to be very helpful. I can better understand what the author is trying to say and what was going through her head as she wrote it.

“The mention of black vomit cheers me up” pg74
How can anyone possibly be happy at the thought of black vomit and along with that, the author adds detail about “pale green yogurt [she] threw up.” In my opinion her sharing that experience adds no purpose to the story. So essentially she’s just adding unnecessary comments that really play no role, it’s just personal information from her life that’s just really weird.

“It’s bad enough to a prisoner in the hands of white men your equals under the constitution, but to be lorded by a set of ignorant, prejudiced and irresponsible beings of unbleached humanity, was more than I could submit to.” Pg 76
This quote really stuck out to me and I think it’s because I feel like I’m in the somewhat similar situation. For me it’s the whole thing with being African, apparently African and Americans not really African and so they feel the need to discriminate against those who are African. It really don’t make sense at all, we literally look the same, on a piece of paper you check the African and American box just like me. Some people just really need to learn their history because I’m not the enemy. I’m fighting for the same thing that those before me have been fighting for, a right to be equal.

“I considered putting an exclamation point at the end of previous sentence to more accurately portray the gusto with which it was delivered.” Pg 78
I like that the author allows readers to see what she’s thinking while writing this. It’s like she’s having a full on conversation with the readers, but at the same time I feel like this is an example of bad writing. Does the writer really need to tell the audience that she considered adding an exclamation point, she should’ve of just done it instead of telling the audience.

“Sic simper tryannis”
The Latin phrase means thus always to tyrants. John Booth shouts this after shooting Lincoln. Sarah Vowell depicts John Booth as someone who’s been hurt by the laws proposed by Lincoln. A tyrant is any person in a position of authority who exercises power oppressively or despotically. He feels that he must bring death to tyrants. In doing so she sort of sheds a light as well as examines the actions of the bad guy rather than stating that John Booth shot the president therefore he is a bad guy.

She includes Lincoln sense humor, usually in history class were taught all the basic facts about presidents, I don’t ever really think of the president as someone with emotions or a sense of humor. In doing so readers are more connected and sympathetic towards Lincoln.

He was the guy that just assassinated the president so the man hunt was real. This guy had to pay his due. I also think there is some irony to this, John Booth had strong hate for blacks who were hunted through swamps by dogs and now he is in the same situation as runaway slaves

I think it’s a crazy we still don’t have restrictive gun laws today. Getting a drivers license is much easier than getting a gun. I stand with the rest of the teens out there who are fighting for gun control. I’m not saying we’re taking away anyone’s rights to own guns, I’m just saying we need stricter gun laws. How many students are going to have to be gunned down in order for congress to do something about? I just want to make sure I can go to school and not worry about someone shooting it up.

I hate this American idea of were better than the rest of world, I guess this is why many nations hate us. I think it's more like American should really mind it's own business, they in my opinion as well many of the developed nations ruin everything.

I feel like there was some sarcsams when she said that, like she was trying to make a point about all the wrong with things with Jackson. It would be like me if someone says that Washington is their favorite president and I responded with you know my ancestors were slaves. We are just shedding like to the negative aspects that history leaves out.
