My Family

My family includes a mix of different ethnic groups. My cousins, siblings, and grandparents all have different ethnic backgrounds. More specifically, most of my family is from either European, Caribbean, or Indigenous descent. I feel that this has had a huge impact on creating who I am today, as I had the privilege of growing up seeing diversity and learning closely about different cultures. The only thing that I would change is growing up with a sibling; as I was an only-child for the first 13 years of my life. While I love my sister no different, I wish I had the experience of growing up with her.

Despite attending the same elementary school from kindergarten until grade 8, I feel that I went to a very diverse school. This school was located in a lower-middle class neighbourhood and included a mix of both lower and middle class families. With this, included a diversity of different ethnicities. Despite having exposure to so many different ethnic backgrounds, I had attended that same school throughout my whole childhood. Therefore, a lot of the children I grew up with were the same kids I had already been seeing everyday for years and then continued to go to high school with.

My favourite toy growing up was Littlest Pet Shops. These toys were a huge part in my socialization as an only-child. Many of my friends also collected these toys, therefore each recess during school (and even after school during sleepovers!) we would play with these little animals. As I got older and Youtube became more popular, I noticed that a TON of other kids from around the world also liked these toys. So much, that there was a huge "community" of people that would create Youtube videos and create and full-on produce entire movies showcasing these toys as the "actors".

Growing up, I have always been shy and quiet. However, over my time as working as a PSW at a retirement home, I have personally felt my confidence grow and my "extrovertness" shine. While working as a PSW, I have been exposed to working with many different age and ethnic groups including coworkers, resident families, and residents themselves. I feel that my confidence has significantly grown since working in this position and being faced with many different situations and communicating with so many different people.

Since I was an only-child for the first 13 years of my life, my peers were a significant source of influence for me. I was also a quiet kid, so while I didn't have many friends, the friends I did make were very influential and remain important to me as I am still friends with most of them.
