In Chinese myth and culture, the tiger is one of the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac. In Chinese art, the tiger is depicted as an earth symbol and equal rival of the Chinese dragon. In Imperial China, a tiger was the personification of war and represented the highest army general, while the emperor and empress were represented by a dragon and phoenix. Koreans on the other hand named the tiger the King of the Animals. In India, god Shiva was seen in the aspect of the destroyer and was always depicted as wearing a tiger skin and riding on a tiger.
The Tyger by William Blake

In this poem, the tiger is strikingly beautiful yet also horrific in its capacity for violence. Blake asks what kind of a God, could or would design such a terrifying beast as the tiger? The tiger initially appears as a strikingly sensuous image. However, as the poem progresses, it takes on a symbolic character, and comes to embody the spiritual and moral problem the poem explores: perfectly beautiful and yet perfectly destructive. Blake’s tiger becomes the symbolic center for an investigation into the presence of evil in the world. Since the tiger’s remarkable nature exists both in physical and moral terms, the speaker’s questions about its origin must also encompass both physical and moral dimensions.

In Yann Martel's 2001 Man Booker Prize winning novel Life of Pi, the protagonist, surviving shipwreck for months in a small boat, somehow avoids being eaten by the other survivor, a large Bengal tiger. The story was adapted in Ang Lee's 2012 feature film of the same name.
Jim Corbett's 1944 Man-Eaters of Kumaon tells ten true stories of his tiger-hunting exploits in what is now the northern Uttarakhand region of India. In Rudyard Kipling's 1894 The Jungle Book, the tiger, Shere Khan, is the mortal enemy of the human protagonist, Mowgli; the book has formed the basis of both live-action and animated films. Other tiger characters aimed at children tend to be more benign, as for instance Tigger in A. A. Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh and Hobbes of the comic strip Calvin and Hobbes, both of whom are represented as simply stuffed animals come to life.

The main character, Piscine Patel, an adult Canadian, reminisces about his childhood in India, whose father owns a zoo in Pondicherry. When Pi's father decides to sell the zoo, he immigrate with his wife and sons to Canada. A few days out of port, the ship encounters a storm and sinks. Pi manages to escape in a small lifeboat that also holds a spotted hyena, an injured Grant's zebra, and an orangutan. The hyena kills the zebra and then the orangutan. A tiger has been hiding under the boat's tarpaulin after having boarded the lifeboat with ambivalent assistance from Pi himself some time before the hyena attack. Suddenly emerging from his hideaway, Richard Parker kills and eats the hyena. After 277 days after, the lifeboat washes onto a beach in Mexico, after which the tiger disappears into the nearby jungle without looking back. Pi has a conversation with two officials, who are conducting an inquiry into the shipwreck and tells them his tale, but the officials reject it as unbelievable. Pi then offers them a second story in which he is adrift on a lifeboat not with zoo animals, but with the ship's cook, a Taiwanese sailor with a broken leg, and his own mother. The cook amputates the sailor's leg for use as fishing bait, then kills the sailor himself as well as Pi's mother for food, and soon he is killed by Pi, who dines on him. The investigators note parallels between the two stories. They conclude that the hyena symbolizes the cook, the zebra the sailor, the orangutan Pi's mother, and the tiger represents Pi. Pi asks the officials which story they prefer: they eventually choose the story with the animals.

Tiger by Franz Marc

In style, Franz Marc's paintings of 1912 show the influence of the two Blaue Reiter exhibitions as well as the Futurist show which the artist saw at the Sturm Gallery in Berlin in April. In content, these works demonstrate a new and disturbing sense of restlessness, of tension, of imminence and anticipation. These qualities are evidenced in the painting Tiger, painted in March of 1912. In the midst of a landscape composed almost entirely of cubic forms rendered in bright luminous tones of red, green, violet, and orange, the animal of the title, a beast of tremendous power and size, is seen perched upon a rock. This is not the kind of dreamy, transcendent image, but rather the picture of a killer. Disturbed from its sleep, its head risen, its stark yellow eyes fixed upon its intended victim, this tiger, composed solely in tones of yellow and black, is ready to discharge the kinetic force of its massive and muscular bulk. The images of this animal is made to seem even more powerful by the block-like construction of the forms that determine its body. The entire works is filled with tension, with a sense of apprehension, with a presentiment of quick and sudden death. In this painting the feeling of security, of harmony and comfort that Marc had projected in his previous works is now entirely absent.
