I Tried to Use Artificial Intelligence for My Homework (and Ended Up Calling My Parents)

Last week, I made a very adult decision: I decided to be efficient. I had a research assignment to finish, a deadline approaching fast, and zero motivation. So I thought, “This is the perfect moment to use artificial intelligence.” After all, the internet keeps telling me that AI is the future, that it will change education, and that humans will soon be unnecessary. Great. I was ready to be unnecessary.

The task sounded simple. I needed help with a research project. Nothing dramatic. Just some information, a short explanation, and maybe a nice image to make everything look professional. I opened my laptop, typed my request, and waited like a genius of the 21st century.

The first problem appeared immediately.

The text I received was… impressive, but not in a good way. I asked for information about my topic, and the AI decided to write passionately about something completely different. I wanted research. It gave me philosophy. I wanted facts. It gave me life advice. At one point, I’m pretty sure it was emotionally supporting me instead of explaining the topic. Very kind. Very useless.

I tried again. I changed my instructions. I was clear. I was polite. I even said “please,” because I’ve seen the movies and I want the robots to remember that later. This time, the text was closer to my topic, but still strange. It used big academic words, but when I read it carefully, it said absolutely nothing. It was like listening to someone who talks for five minutes and then you realize you learned zero things.

Then came the images.

I asked for a simple image to include in my project. Something normal. Something realistic. What I got looked like it came from a nightmare. The people in the image had too many fingers. Some hands had six fingers. Some had eight. One hand looked like a confused octopus. I stared at the screen and thought, “How am I supposed to explain this to my teacher?”

“Yes, professor, this image represents innovation… and extra fingers.”

At this point, I was tired. Mentally, emotionally, spiritually tired. I had spent more time fighting with artificial intelligence than actually working on my assignment. So I did the most embarrassing thing possible for a modern adult.

I asked my parents for help.

And you know what? They helped. Without extra fingers. Without random paragraphs about unrelated topics. Just real questions, real explanations, and real human confusion—but the useful kind. My dad asked questions that actually made sense. My mom helped me organize my ideas. No sarcasm. No hallucinations. No robot rebellion.

In the end, I finished my assignment. Not thanks to artificial intelligence, but thanks to natural intelligence… and years of parental experience.

So yes, AI is powerful. Yes, it’s impressive. And yes, it will probably take over the world one day. But for now, if you really need something done correctly, clearly, and without extra fingers, maybe just call your parents.

No estoy bromeando. Persona diferente, turno diferente, realidad diferente. Mi dinero se quedó ahí. Yo no.

Imitation translation

Team: Adriana ,Vanesa, Evelin , Caleb

Why is it important to know about the linguistic sign in translation?

in one language might point to multiple signifieds (polysemy), or a signified might exist in one culture but have no signifier in another. Understanding the "sign" helps a translator realize they are translating concepts, not just strings of letters.

How can you relate Semiotics to translation?

Translator acts as a "decoder" and "re-encoder." You look at a sign (which could be a word, a gesture, or even a color mentioned in a text), interpret its value within the source culture, and find a sign in the target culture that carries the same weight. Semiotics reminds us that meaning is "situated"—it depends on the system it lives in.

How are English and Spanish differently in some of their structures?

Because Spanish has clear markers on verbs and nouns, it can be more flexible with word order (Subject-Verb-Object can often shift). English is much more rigid; changing the order often changes the meaning entirely.
