Will Freeman is one of the protagonist of the story. He is a thirty six year old and he lives in London but he doesn't do anything for a living. He doesn’t have to work because he gets money from a Christmas song his dad wrote. At the beggining Will is lazy, selfish, and only cares about himself. That is why he doesn’t want responsibilities or serious relationships. However, things begin to change when he gets in a single parent group pretending to be a single dad and he ends up meeting kid called Marcus, and he learns to care about other people and at the same time he teaches him how to be more confident.

Marcus Brewer is a 12 year old boy that lives in London with his single mother, who is kind but has some troubles with depression. Marcus is shy and akward but very small. However, he is different than others because of the way he acts and dresses, and that is why he was bullied at school. Before meeting Will, Marcus was always being controlled by his mother, who was constantly telling him what to do or what not to do. That is why, he began to visit Will each evening. He thought he was more fun and relaxed than her mother, who was always overprotecting him. In the end, Marcus becomes more confident, independent, and happier since he had people around him who care about him.

Fiona Brewer is Marcus’s single mother. She is a kind and loving woman, but she struggles with depression and often feels very sad and lonely because she doesn't accept other's help. She is different from most parents, since she is always telling his son what to do, what made him be shy and akward with the other kids. Because of this, Marcus sometimes feels embarrassed and out of place. She was so sad, that she even tried to kill herself by taking drogs, but she finally survived since her friend Suzie and Marcus found her before she could choke. By the end of the story, Fiona is still a sensitive person, but she accepts more support from others. She realizes that she doesn’t have to face everything on her own, and she feels better knowing that Marcus has Will and other people in his life to care for him too.
