Picture #1 Canadian Celebrations
I really like you incorporated the sense of belonging in your metaphor. We do honor those who sacrifice and by coming together to celebrate these lives, we feel a sense of belonging. We share the same emotions for those who we have lost which allows us to relate to each other. Another important point to notice about your photo is the power these types of memorials have recognizing what we value in Canadian society.
Picture #2 Citizenship
I agree that being a citizen goes beyond documentation. We must be actively participating in society for it function and that includes helping others around us. We need to teach our students to be “shift disturbers” and give them the basis to fight for change. As Canadian’s we are always trying to improve in our systems, structures and environments making it essential that we provoke our students to discover what they are passionate about.
Picture #3
I agree that the places we come from are intrinsically embedded in our identities. Our relationships with where we come from and what represents home is so important in who we become. For myself, I identify with the mountains because they have always been in my view. When I think of home, I think of them and when I think of being Canadian, I see them. Our geography is vast and diverse, but the relationship we have to our land in Canada is analogous.
Picture #4
As Canadian’s we are spoiled with beaches, oceans, lakes, prairies, mountains and forest. Being able to explore is defiantly a part of who we are as Canadians. As we travel from region to region, we discover some of things that differ us from one another, but in turn we discover those things that make us similar. Snowboarding is a great example of how you can move around and find passion in something that is definitely rooted in Canadian society.
