Firstly, I think we had a good session with ECU students as it is the first time for me to join in this course. The topic for the first day is college life. We discussed about many informations such as lifestyle in college, about ECU , college mascot which is a pirate ,clothes they wear to classes ,hobbies, types of fast food and more. Besides that we also gave information about our university as well.

I feel really nervous at the begining to talk to them because at one point i dont know how to start the conversation but after some minutes of the session i feel its easy and both the team can understand each others points. One of the problem is the sitting arrangment. I sat at behind so i had to talk louder for them to hear me clearly. Lastly, i am very exicted for the next session with the students.

JEANNIE’S PERSONAL REFLECTIONS: COLLEGE LIFE

It was a really fun session introducing ourselves to students from East California University which was literally at another end of the globe. Meeting new faces was definitely intimidating at first but one thing I noticed was, student from ECU was pretty laid back the whole session compared to the most of us. I think maybe it’s normal for them since they are broad up differently. It was really nice of them to show us some artefacts that represent their university.

Today’s topic was college life, we spoke about what our universities look like and life as a college student. We shared about where our favourite hang-out places are, where and what do we normally eat and activities we do to kill time. Basically we discussed about things that college students deal with on a day to day basis. We talked about sports, club activities, celebration and college tradition. Fraternities and sororities are one of the topic ECU students shared with us, however we don’t have these type social organisation Malaysian universities.

Well, I personally think that we could have done better if it wasn’t because of the awkward sitting position. This has limit some of the student opportunity to speak during today’s session. However, everything still went well and I am definitely looking forward for the next link with ECU student.

FARIS'S Reflection on the first video session.

For the first session, i think it was a day that opened up to a new experience for everybody. Getting to talk to these American students was a great experience as i believe not many of us have been able to talk to any students from a foreign university before. Due to this, i was also a bit nervous at first; seeing these new faces with their different styles. I became even more nervous when they started introducing themselves to us. This is due to them talking to us in such a 'chilled' way. On the other hand, on our side, most of us were still a bit nervous . However, as the video session progressed, those feelings became less and less and we were able to interact more confidently with the american students.

It was quite thoughtful of them to show us their items or souvenirs that relates towards their university which is the East Carolina University. It actually made me more interested to find out more about their university. This feeling became even more so when they showed us their university football video and their mascot the 'Pirates'. This opened up my eyes as to how much of a big thing football is in their university. Getting to know most of their college way of life is great as i can see that it's pretty much the same as it is portrayed in TV shows or movies.

I am looking forward towards the next video sessions with the ECU students.

NURIN'S REFLECTIONS.

The first session was fun. The ECU students were very open and we can talk comfortably. They told us so much and showed video on their football team. It was very cool. They really have high competitive spirit in football. We shared a lot of information despite our language barrier. Sometimes they hardly understand us because of the Malaysian slang that we used, but we overcame it just fine. I can tell we all had a different way spending our times. Our diverse culture might attract them the most. Having friends from different may be unusual to them. They were well prepared, bringing their personal items to the class. They shared pretty much everything about their college life and I thought it was really awesome.

During our conversation, I felt very nervous conversing in their mother tongue. I afraid of making mistake while talking and I prefer to stay quiet, only helping others at the back. I also do not have many ideas or question to ask. At some point I thought it will be awkward if I suddenly jump to other topic and might as well disturb the flow of the conversation. I look forward to our next meeting.

I didn’t manage to join the first session of the class. But here’s my college life story. I’m currently studying Tourism Management and this is my second year. Studying Tourism, I do expect I’ll be travelled a lot and yeah, totally different but still okay. Tourism course had done several activities such as visit to Setiu Wetland Research Centre, hike to Bukit Kluang and adventure to Tempurung Cave. There are many more upcoming activities and I can’t wait for it. In UMT, I joined Sarawak Culture Club and involved a lot in traditional dance performance for some events here. The first dance I had here was for 2016 convocation night. I was so nervous because the last time I danced in front of many people was when I was 11 years old. Then, second performance was for Let’s Balliamo, Together We Dance. The best thing was, we got paid for it. The biggest event ever I had joined was dance performance in UNESCO night. That’s the most memorable moment ever. That’s all about my college life. It’s quite sad that I didn’t meet East Carolina University for the first session.

College life can be known as exposure to adult life, basically stepping out from school life which pampered by parents is far different compare to college life as mostly that is the time our maturity increase. Maturity hits in many ways, for me it happened when I entered Polytechnic to pursue my Diploma in Tourism Management when I was 18. Through ups and downs I have learned many things, for example about leadership, integrity, friendship and many more. Looking back then, I was an active student in my polytechnic days, never fail to join any events, meetings and so on. Mostly I will be on my own, never depend on anyone for anything till at a phase that life totally turned the other way round. I found a bunch friends that taught me being alone doesn’t create sweet memories and I started to hang out with them, became kind a talkative girl at a point and that is the time I realise being a studious and introvert student actually cover few of my inner self. But I did not abandon my academics, I also learned on how to think and converse in a mature sense. Those memories and experience was useful when I enter UMT to pursue my Degree in Tourism Management, I am quite adaptive to the situations and surrounding around as the college life was not new to me. And for now im living an ordinary college life like how I used to be back then

The first session was nerve-wrecking but in a good way. I was surprised when the students from ECU was really open and made us comfortable while exchanging opinions, beliefs and sharing facts about their college life which is a big part of them.
During the session we talked about the sports that is considered the big sport of the college. For ECU their big sport is american football and basketball where they have big game nights and cheer on for their team. We also had the chance to tell them about our football which is soccer. We also learned about ECU's mascot which is a pirate thus earning their title of the pirates. We also shared on our mode of transportation for most of us to get to a class, some of them even go to class by skateboard! One of them also exposed us to their tradition of having sorority houses and the benefits of it. Then we were exposed to the food places that are available around their campus, to name a few of them are parker BBQ, chipotle, and chic-fil-a. Most of them are fast foods outlets which makes it easier for them to grab a bite. We also showed to them the many breakfast we can eat around in Malaysia such as coconut rice or nasi lemak. It was an amazing session and i enjoyed it really much.

Being in college is a huge thing to my family and I. No one has ever come as far as I am now, and I planned to continue farther as I can. Life in college is full of challenges but I will never let it be in my way. In college, I learned a lot. I’ve managed to join a club, being an active member, learned a new language, made incredible unique friends, seen different types of lecturers, started to play volleyball and even tried my best to eat the food here. I am currently studying biological sciences and for the first time in my life, I’ve planted and sold plants.
Getting into college also means leaving my home. I have many experiences with my roommates. The goods and the bads. However, I felt lucky to have them because they helped me when I was in need. Besides that, I love learning new languages and one of them is French. I am proud to say that I’ve involved in an event that involving the Embassy of France. This has been a good opportunity for me to practise my newly learned language and my soft skills. Anyway, college is a great place for people to learn and pursue what they wanted.

Floating were a common issue that face by everyone in this university.

The hardest things in my college life are hunting for food especially Friday and puasa. The shops were all close during Friday until 3p.m. even though mcdonalds and KFC. In campus or the food stalls that nearby campus are all malay food. There are not much entertainment in Terengganu but I can expose and experience to all the nature. Thus, I do release stress by go for hiking, go for beach view and enjoy Terengganu’s food.

REFLECTION ON COLLEGE LIFE SESSION

This first session was definitely a new experience for me. The session started with brief introduction of ourselves. We also shared our education background where each of us mentioned our programs we taking in the university and the students from East Carolina University US also do the same so. At that point, I realised that each of us are from very different fields. Actually, that fact excited me more because normally most of the courses offered are to the students of almost same field.

During the discussion, we shared a lot of things about our college life. It starts with discribing our colleges. They shared some significant things regarding their college. East Carolina University US is well known for American Football (Rugby). They showed a video of their college American Football Team. In UMT, there are many games played by UMT students. One of the most popular sport is football. We also introduced to them our national football team 'Harimau Malaysia'. Besides that, they also mentioned that 'Pirates' are their college mascot. They widely use their mascot almost in many things and during their college events. At the same time we showed the turtle which is known as UMT's mascot. There many other interesting things we have discussed during session such as type of food available in our college, weekly budget and also regarding our hobbies. To sum up, there are huge difference in the college life of US student and Malaysian student in many aspects. Overall that was a fantastic starter for the course
