The writing workshop enables a teacher to meet students’ diverse individual needs because within this framework, students can all be working on something. It is a teacher’s job to help a student master a writing technique or skill that is useful for them in their writing at this time. One student may still need help with conventions, using periods and exclamation points, while another is learning how to create music in poetry with alliteration. Knowing these things can help you understand how you can help each student develop as a writer. Students will also feel comfortable because they get to work at their pace and focus on things that are useful and meaningful to them at that time in their writing.

“As workshop matures through familiarity and practice, it probably looks more like a “project central”, with students throughout the room engaged in various stages pf process. Some might be going over the writing they began in a previous session; some might be drawing, making list, or going through books for information; some drafting or revising; and still others putting finishing touches on final posters, letters, or books. It wouldn’t be totally quiet because people would be conversing. Some might be talking with you, some might be conferring with one another, and some might be reading their own writing aloud”. (Spandel, 2012)

This is used to help students improve writing skills and find their writing style. To help your students with their writing, you can point out certain craft moves that their favorite author used from their favorite book. Even if it is an assigned reading, you can tell your students they can use similar word choice to add to their writing. Mentor texts also help extend the assignment, if need be. The mentor text can help inspire more ideas the students may want to write about.

The Importance of Incorporating High quality literature in the classroom

By incorporating high quality literature into the classroom this can help to increase background knowledge in writing. If children take prior readings into consideration when writing this can help increase things such as their sentence fluency and word choice. Another reason is that through reading quality literature this can help to encourage students to want to pursue their own writing. If students are reading about something that they find interesting or exciting they will maybe want to go back and write about what they read.

One way to incorporate literature into the classroom is through connection. After reading, you can ask students to write in their journals about something that they may have related to in the story. Another idea is to involve culturally relevant literature. By doing this students of different backgrounds will feel more comfortable discussing and sharing in class.

Quality children's literature should promote diversity. The titles in your classroom should represent people of all cultures and backgrounds, after all the students in your classroom will reflect this as well. Having these kinds of books in the classroom to be a guide to your students can encourage them to write and want to be good writers. They will also be eager to try out new craft moves they see in these stories because they share a connection with these books. Every student in the classroom deserves to see themselves portrayed in roles that are considered to be quality literature.
