CUBAN MISSILE CRISIS

Soviet leader Nikita Kruschev along with fellow

communist leader, Fidel Castro of Cuba, agreed

to place nuclear weapons in Cuba. When the

United States found out about the weapons, they

created a blockade around Cuba to prevent more

weapons from entering the nation and demanded

that the weapons already placed there be sent back

to the Soviet Union. An agreement was met between

the U.S. and U.S.S.R. that the missiles would be retuned

to Russia if the U.S. promised to never invade Cuba

unless they were provoked.

THE SPACE RACE

The space race was the term used to describe the time when

the US and USSR were locked in competition trying to become capable'

in space flight. It was believed to be necessary to keep each nation safe

but also just for superiority in getting to space. Efforts to reach the moon,

venus, and mars were made by launching satellites and unmanned probes.

The first artificial satellite, Sputnik 1, was launched on October 4, 1957, by

the soviets. The Soviets also succeeded in sending the first human to space,

Yuri Gagarin, on April 12,1961. The climax of the space race was when the US

succeeded in landing the first person on the moon, Neil Armstrong, on July 20, 1969.

Carlos
