Who is Gabe (P1)

Gabe is Troy Maxson's brother who has special needs. Gabe had fought in a war and was shot in the head, now there's a metal plate in his head but it affected the way he thinks and acts permanently. Throughout the story he tells about how he is meant to open the gates of heaven for Saint Peter.

My Opinion on Gabe (P2)

Personally, I heavily sympathize with Gabe. I have family with special needs, so Gabe struck a special cord in my heart. I think Gabe's main strength is his devotion, not only to his religion but also to his family. The way he plays the trumpet at the end for Troy shows ust how much he loves him. I think his main weakness though is just his delusion about Saint Peter talking to him, althouhgh that's a double-edged sword as his delusion also pushes a lot of the decisions he makes that end up making him such a great brother and character.

Art to Describe Gabe (P4)

I used the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel to connect to Gabe. The ceiling's art is very religious and in the most famous piece of art on the ceiling, God is reaching out to Adam. I connected this to how Gabe feels that Saint Peter is reaching out to him and asking him to open the gates of heaven. Another reason I decided to use this is because, it is a chapel after all, so the building itself is religious and most of Gabe's character is surrounded by his strong religious beliefs.

Comparison of Fences to Raisin in the Sun (P10)

Fences is very similar to Raisin in the Sun but they also have some distinct differences. Walter Lee can definitely be compared to Troy Maxson in that they're both the 'Men of the Family.' The themes of the play can also be compared. A huge theme in Fences is love, Rose's and Troy's love but also the love between Bono and Troy, the love between Rose and Cory, there's a lot of love to go around in Fences, which can be compared to the way Ruth and Walter's love is tested in Raisin in the Sun when he loses the 10k dollars.

The plays are also very different, which can be seen when the characters interact. In Raisin in the Sun, most of the characters are much more ready to rock the boat than in Fences. For example, the entire family supports the move to the white neighborhood, but in Fences, Troy doesn't even want Cory to try at football so he doesn't get discriminated against. Overall, the two plays share many similarities, but they also have many differences, they are two different stories with all different characters after all.

Fences Theme (P9)

A main theme in Fences is sports, more precisely, the change of sports. Throughout the play, even when Troy is telling Rose that he cheated on her and got another woman pregnant, he makes analogies to sports.

One of the only things in the backyard is a baseball and baseball bat, and sports define most of Troy's character. When Troy was younger he was a brilliant baseball player, he was just young enough to watch sports become integrated, but just too old to participate in the integration. Because of this, Troy has a lot of pent-up rage, and it comes out in the way he talks to his family, for example, ruining his child's life because he wanted to pursue football.

Theme of Raisin in the Sun (P8)

Money is a huge theme in Raisin in the Sun. The story opens with the grandfather of Travis already passed and a check for 10k dollars coming in the mail. This 10k dollars moves the plot along. For example, Walter Lee's redemption is that he turns away Lindner and doesn't take his money, which couldn't have happened if the 10k dollar check hadn't come at all.

Money drives this plot, it affects the relationship between characters, for example Beneatha and Walter fight about the money being used for her schooling, and Walter and Mama fight about when he lost the money.

I relate the song to Gabe primarily because of the line, "By now you should've somehow realized what you gotta do," because the entire play, Gabe is on a mission and he knows what he has to do. I also think the song is about love obviously, but I think it's also about having someone who supports you through anything no matter what and that's what Troy and Rose are to Gabe, he always will have them be there for him until they die.

He fought in a war, and took a bullet in his head and survived. Now he lives everyday with people treating him like a second class citizen just because of, not only his race, but also his disability. He's a super brave and courageous character and he worked so hard to be where he is in life, it may not seem like much but it's everything to him.

Gabe's Character Traits (P2A)

Gabe is very endearingly naive. For example on pages 90-96, Troy is admitting to Rose that he got another woman pregnant, Gabe doesn't realize this and he tells Rose about how he chased hell-hounds, " Say, Rose . . . you know I was chasing hell-hounds and them bad mens come and get me and take me away. Troy helped me. He come down there and told them they better let me go before he beat them up. Yeah, he did!" This quote shows that Gabe often has a hard time reading a room, making him naive, but in a way that makes you wanna hug him, you feel bad for Gabe, you wanna help him understand event though you know you can't. And a part of you doesn't wanna help him understand, part of you is a little jealous that he doesn't know what's happening between Troy and Rose.

Gabe is also very passionate, like on pages 142-143 Gabe is attempting to play his trumpet to open the gates for Saint Peter and he doesn't give up until the trumpet makes noise, "He inhales and blows into the horn. No sound. Gabriel blows again, a huge effort: Nothing...He points the trumpet at the ground and inhales as he arcs the horn upwards till he’s on his toes, closing his eyes, putting the mouthpiece to his lips; Gabriel blows once more, and: From the tarnished, battered bell of the broken trumpet comes an ear- splitting note..." This quote shows that Gabe knew his trumpet wasn't working but he was so passionate about what he had to do that he kept trying until the trumpet made a noise.
