Artist: Ko Siu Lan（高小蘭）
- Ko Siu Lan cares about politics and dares to include political elements in her works to criticize the Chinese government.
- To evoke people of the worsening political situation in Hong Kong
- Having a close relationship with Hong Kong as she had already exhibited a number of artworks in Hong Kong before. It would be great to invite her to continue this art journey, especially in the post-2019 era when people are desperate and worried about the future. We need artworks that remind us of the past as well as encourage us to communicate and relate to each other.
- To commemorate the democracy movement in 2019-Hong Kong in a safe and subtle way
- Hopefully to provide space for people with dissent to have socially engaged dialogue-based conversations

Maria Thereza Alves has often worked at the intersection of politics, culture and environment. Her methodology and artistic interests lend themselves to Hong Kong’s environment, at the macro level with its history of colonization and vibrant and at smaller levels with isolated communities that exist in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong has a long history of colonization and Maria’s artwork can inspire people in Hong Kong today. In particular, with Hong Kong having come out of colonization, how do they create a new identity moving forward. Alves’ work would provide a new perspective on how Hong Kong can find a way forward.

Hong Kong is a city where nature mingles with the city. There are many parks and forests that closely border developed parts of the city and create an intermingling of built cities and nature. It also has a diverse set of wildlife and plant species that demonstrate the transference of nature that is seen in other of her works. This would provide a good source of inspiration for Alves.

Hong Kong is a very cosmopolitan city with people moving in and out, there is a lot of cultural diversity and that changes the nature and culture of the city. Additionally, with an increasing diaspora of Hong Kong people abroad it poses the question of how being a Hong Konger is changing. This is an opportunity for the artist to explore the borders of what is Hong Kong and apply her ideas of a borderless history. Alve’s work may help people in Hong Kong find out the cultural identity.

Brian Goeltzenleuchter is a Californian olfactory artist who focuses on community projects, once made a series of hand sanitizer, with its scents inspired by the stories of refugees.

Scent is one of our senses, but olfactory artworks are rarely seen in the local art scene. The use of scent is highly commodified in Hong Kong, in which most of the specialistity is for making perfume, scented candles, room fragrances. They are market products related to lifestyle and taste. Audiences seldom experience scents within the contemporary arts setting.

The memory of scent from different communities can encourage sensible communication between audience and the interviewed people, which fits the model of “dialogic aesthetics”. We propose the artist to create a series of site-specific scent projects, integrating memories of the local communities and scents.

In Hong Kong:

What are the scent of memories and our streets? During the pandemic, people were used to wearing masks and being separated from the scents in our neighborhood. The project is to invite local communities from a few districts to be the guide of the artist. During the trip, the local residents will share their ordinary neighborhoods, daily life or some memorable places. The artist may integrate their stories to make some scents, to create a map or route of smell. The result will be presented in an exhibition and some public programs.

In between Hong Kong and California:
Given that the whole art project would be held in the post-covid era, it is imagined that people are finally gaining back their interaction with each other. This project encourages the interaction between people by blurring the boundaries between races, gender and nationality. Brian would first collect stories and memories from the Hong Kong immigrants living in California and make scents out of it.
