Rome's law and government were the basis for the United States. Rome's government was one where the people voted for representatives to represent them. This is called a Republic and should sound familiar because America's government is very similar. Within this government, laws were made that are still in effect today. Like innocent until proven guilty or burden of proof on the accuser.

Rome's massive empire led to an influx of people, leading to cultural diffusion. Rome led to the Greco-Roman culture, a combination of both Rome and Greek customs. Romans primarily used Latin as their language (at least in the Western Empire,) which has roots in Spanish, French, Portuguese, and the Italian modern-day languages. Latin phrases are also used in English; however, English is not considered a Romance language.

The Arts & Inventions

Rome made many contributions to the arts throughout their existence, including the arch, sculptures, mosaics, frescoes, aqueducts, cement, roads, and raised sidewalks. Frescoes were found in Pompeii, preserved from the volcanic ash of Mt. Vesuvius. These inventions proved to be very useful. Cement was made of volcanic ash, leading to its long life, which enabled it to be used as roads and sidewalks. Level roads led to faster and more frequent travel, while raised sidewalks allowed pedestrians to travel freely without concern for carts and stepping in sewage. Aqueducts allowed for the transportation of water, due to their stable arches (another invention) water was able to travel farther and faster than ever before.

Rome made many advancements in literature, science, and in math. Galen was arguably the most famous doctor in Rome, he made various discoveries in anatomy and was a surgeon. Rome's literature was also booming, with various epics, poetry, and other stories highlighting the culture of the Romans. Take, for example, The Aeneid, by Virgil, an epic poem about a Trojan who flees Troy to go to Italy. With mathematics, Rome created a system called Roman numerals, which helped them with their everyday lifestyles, but proved to be difficult with larger numbers.

Rome's economy relied heavily on trade and agriculture. Trade proved to be fairly easy, as Rome was on a peninsula, and roads led to easy access to transportation. Rome traded, grapes, olives, olive oil, bricks, cement, and glass. Many jobs of Roman citizens consisted of education, public works (law enforcement, public health), and artisans. Framers and those involved with agriculture were also plentiful.

As Rome divided into two, the Eastern and Western Empires, thanks to Diocletian, many advancements were made, particularly in the East. Christianity, one of the largest religions in the world was practiced within the Eastern Empire. Constantine carried out the changes by Diocletian and was the one to legalize Christianity in the East.
