         <description><![CDATA[<div>These are tools that&nbsp;<em>may&nbsp;</em>be present in some narratives</div><ul><li><strong>Motif </strong>[moh-<strong>teef</strong>]: a meaningful pattern in art and literature. When you see an image, type of character, or symbol pop up again and again, chances are you're dealing with a motif.&nbsp;</li><li><strong>Flashback</strong>: an occurrence in which a character remembers an earlier event that happened before the current point of the story.&nbsp;</li><li><strong>In medias res </strong>[in <strong>me</strong>-di-ahs <strong>res</strong>]: This Latin phrase describes a story that starts in the middle of the action (literally—in medias res means "in the middle of things").&nbsp;</li><li><strong>Cliffhanger</strong>: when a text concludes suddenly or with a thrilling plot twist.&nbsp;</li><li><strong>Metaphor</strong>: a hidden comparison without the use of "as" or "like" ("I'm the king").&nbsp;</li><li><strong>Simile</strong>: a comparison using "like" or "as" ("I'm living like a king &nbsp;</li></ul>]]></description>
