Gutenberg's studies were unclear but it was known that he learned the trade of a goldsmith while living in Mainz, Germany. Gutenberg also learned bookmaking and some blacksmithing skills in his early career.

Gutenberg's goal was to reproduce medieval liturgical manuscript by using movable pieces of metal blocks for each letter. Three most important things he accomplished was that he published the 42 Line Bible in 1445 after 2 years of hard labor, He printed indulgences of paper used by the church and he trained people to establish their own printings. Gutenberg was important to the Renaissance because he contributed to the protestant reformation that split apart the Catholic church.

The printing press he invented made it possible to print books in large quantities. A printing press is a machine that takes texts and images and transfers them from movable type to paper. The printing press he created was arranged over a flat wooden plate. Ink was applied to the type and a sheet of paper was laid on top. An upper plate was brought down to meet the lower plate. The 2 plates pressed the paper and type together, creating sharp images on the paper.
