Dr. Tracy Bower shows how important empathy is for a leader in any setting. Dealing with positive and negative outcomes almost everyday, it is important to be able to put yourself in other people's shoes. Understanding where people can be coming from and what people can be going through is extremely important. This is a skill that I definitely need to keep working on when in my own work setting. I sometimes lack the ability to put myself in my coworker's shoes to realize what other outside factors they may be going through.

"Empathy, the ability to understand the feelings and experiences of another, is an essential skill leaders today must acquire." -Harvard University

Empathy is not something that comes in everyone's skill set. It is a skill that has to be learned through understanding other people's stress and how you can better their life while still getting everything done that needs to be done. Having more self-awareness is crucial to be able to be empathetic towards others. Once again, this article suggests mindsets along with actions that leaders should take in order to be successful.

"It goes back to empathy."

There doesn't need to be a cause for every struggle or hardship in someones life. People can be going through something without actually knowing what that something is. Personally, I don't need to constantly be finding reasons to take some time off or delegate a task to someone else. I find myself overworking and when I do decide that I need to relax I feel the need to create some excuse or reasoning behind my actions. At the end of the day, my reason can be that I'm human. By having empathy for myself and others, everyone can create an environment that they want to be a part of and enjoy working in.

If a leader wants to create a team with excellent mental health then they first need a plan. Only 1 in 4 companies has a mental health strategy for their employees. No matter the organization, the tier of worker, or what department they work in, ANYONE can be a leader when it comes to mental health. Everyone has the power to be able to stand up for themselves if something isn't right. However, I think the problem is that people struggle to speak out about mental health as some think it can be a sign of weakness. There is an estimated $1 trillion lost every year due to poor productivity caused by depression and anxiety. Now is the time to make a change!

This infographic does a great job of showing the misconceptions of what empathy is thought to be and how people can actually benefit from proper empathetic actions. These tips can and should be applicable to almost everything leadership and work setting. When looking at both lists for the first time, there was a handful from both sides that I can be better about and also some things that I think I already do pretty well.

This infographic and article provides examples of easy ways workers can feel overworked and stressed out in their place of work. In order to be an effective leader, you can't be giving your employees unnecessary work on the weekends, during their lunch time, and take home work after their shift. Their lives can easily be completely consumed by their job and cause burnout to create a toxic work environment. These are all aspects of my work life that I need to avoid myself and also make sure that no one working with me has to run into these problems as well.
