The purposes of trials and appeals in our court system are to determine whether or not a person or group is responsible for committing a crime and to give the due consequences. The text states, “judges or juries determine the facts of the case and then apply the relevant law to decide the outcome of the case” (Democracy 13). There are Criminal Trial Courts and Civil Trial Courts.

Federal courts have limited jurisdiction and, “can generally hear cases that raise questions about a federal law (called a statute) or the federal constitution” (Democracy 13). State courts have a wider variety of cases, “that deal with state or local law, the state constitution, or federal law or the federal constitution” (Democracy 13). In regards to local courts they, “are part of their state court system and decide cases involving local laws, like those concerning littering or parking violations” (Democracy 13).
