Welcome to our grade 6 Islamic Studies class, where our goal is to inform, motivate and inspire students towards living Islam, insha'Allah. As we delve into the deeper meaning of Ayah-ul-Kursi, students will discover how beautifully Allah (swt) calls us towards Him, helping us to reflect on the three branches of Tawheed. We will also explore the ways in which we can apply Tawheed to our salah; ultimately bringing us closer to our Creator. Furthermore, through the story of prophet Musa (a.s.) students will reflect on the importance of Tawakkul (reliance on Allah) while exploring it's connection to iRISE, which encapsulates our learning through workshops and activities.

The ability to speak and understand French allows students to communicate with French-speaking people in Canada and around the world, to understand and appreciate the history and evolution of their cultures, and to develop and benefit from a competitive advantage in the workforce. While the knowledge of any language has value, French is not only a global language but the mother tongue of many Canadians and an integral part of the Canadian identity. Learning French equips students to communicate with French-speaking Canadians and millions of French speakers around the world. In addition to strengthening students’ ability to communicate, learning another language develops their awareness of how language and culture interconnect, helping them appreciate and respect the diversity of Canadian and global societies. When a student is exposed to another culture through its language, he or she begins to understand the role that language plays in making connections with others. Knowledge of an additional language strengthens first-language skills. The ability to speak two or more languages generally enhances cognitive development, as well as reasoning and creative-thinking skills. It also enhances the student’s confidence as a learner, facilitates the learning of additional languages, and contributes to academic achievement. The ability to speak both of Canada’s official languages helps prepare students for their role as active and engaged citizens in today’s bilingual and multicultural Canada. In order to develop the skills necessary to become lifelong language learners, students will be given multiple opportunities to: • listen and respond to texts and to others; • speak and interact with others; • read, view, and respond to a variety of texts; • write a variety of texts for many different purposes and audiences. Listening and speaking skills are the springboards to reading and writing. While the curriculum strikes a balance between these four distinct but interconnected skills, oral communication – listening and speaking – is paramount for second-language acquisition. If students hear it, they can say it. If students can say it, they can read it. And if students can read it, they can write it.

I believe the quote above summarizes my passion for teaching Social Studies. As we explore topics from the fur trade to the United Nations to First Nation's rights, Social Studies provide us with the knowledge we need to be informed and engaged global citizens. In grade six, we combine this knowledge with a sense of purpose, providing a sound basis from which to create strong leadership among our students. By engaging in projects and assignments throughout the year, student will exercise their research skills, critical thinking and practical knowledge application. As such, students will graduate from grade six equipped to meet life's challenges with world knowledge, both past and present, insha'Allah.

As I focus on the four branches of reading, writing, oral communication and media literacy, my aim is to empower my students by providing them with the tools they need to voice their thoughts through the written and spoken word. After all, information and imagination lead to great thinking, and great thinking leads to great actions.
As we explore literature, poetry and informational texts through the Ontario Curriculum, I hope to inspire my students to become avid readers, writers and public speakers.
