Introduction

I am in full agreement with the statement the Caribbean society should all aspire to become citizens of the world. If someone were to say otherwise, they are mostly likely contradicting themselves. Globalization refers to the integration of the entire world economies with each other using trade and financial methods. A simple example to better understand globalization is the importation of goods for a monetary price or exchange of something else from a country due to the importer country not being able to produce said goods themselves. Every person in a country is always trying to live and survive which includes housing, food and water which are the necessities and then there is the other luxuries such as air conditioning, motor vehicles all of which were possible due to another country’s intellect and innovation that were offered and made available to their region through both political governments so that they could indulged themselves. Globalization has it pros and cons. A major pro is that it offers underdeveloped or developing countries the opportunity to capitalize on and grow to a better, self-sustainable state. However, a predominantly con is that it further increases the inequality between the rich and powerful countries and small, poor underdeveloped ones by promoting unemployment, threatening already low standard of living and hindering developmental progress. This shows that even though globalization provides significant advantages, it can still be corrupted by the political government body to take advantage of the desperate, unemployed and uneducated people in underdeveloped countries mostly.

The HDI As An Indicator

The human developmental index, HDI is an index representing the overall growth and development of the nation as one. This can be used to determine the status of the country as either under developed, developed or developing since HDI also show a summary measure of achievements in every aspect throughout a human life which are knowledgeable, healthy and long life and a decent standard of living. As of 2017, Norway was in first with the highest HDI of 0.953 and a GNI per capita of 68,012 and Trinidad and Tobago was 68th with a HDI of 0.784 and a GNI per capita of 28,662. GNI is the gross national income and is the sum of a nation's gross domestic product and the net income it generates from foreign sales. Even though Trinidad and Tobago HDI seemed low, it was actually classified under ‘high human development’ in Table 1 according to (Kovacevic). Domestic markets, large importation dependence and small exportation trade all are responsible for the GNI and HDI. This shares some resemblance with the European colonizer times where instead, people were the object being traded for money or goods, that fueled the colonial powers wealth, for the slaves ‘service’ on the cash crop plantation at that time whether it was sugar or bananas. This shows that a more diminishing form of globalization were evident in the mercantilism times but over time, with the emergence of advancements in nearly every field, science and agriculture specifically countries can now produce and export their preference based on the conditions they have and can work with eliminating the European slave trade industry, however there is still a more perverted form of the slave trade today known as human trafficking, which is the illegal selling of abducted people. Working within the Caribbean for further developmental reasons affords only so much opportunities, however internationally, those opportunities becomes nearly limitless due to each and every country unique contribution and of course, to be able to help struggling countries

The Internet Is Globalization

It is through globalization that we have the internet, a vast unlimited well of knowledge of everything on this planet that is accessible nearly everywhere. This is the best example of a globalization product since it is used every day by people, particularly those in corporate businesses. Thanks to communication advancements, you can call someone around the world and have an answer within minutes rather than the standard mailing system used in the previous centuries and that is still present now but the internet removes the long waiting time and cuts cost. This is essential in those fortune 500 companies so they could promote, enhance and grow their business not only locally, but by establishing their businesses internationally as well. It is the speed of communication access and electronic transactions that allow the business to become more productive. Business like this also promote employment for educationally challenged people. These businesses, once successful further brings investment entities to the respective country as well as contribute to the GNP. There is also the social media aspect of the internet which networking companies make use of by providing breaking news that are happening real time around the world to each and every other parts of the world keeping everyone up to date instead of having to be blindsided by the consequences in the case of natural disasters such as storms and earthquakes which again, thanks to progressions by other countries, we can now predict and prepare for in advance. It is the technological leaps made by countries outside the Caribbean vicinity, so we should strive to be citizens of the global village, that ultimately helps every other country through globalization.

How Globalization Enhances The Different Sectors

Globalization have also provided better access to pharmaceuticals, medical apparatus and even trained, qualified personnel. This is hope to not only under developed countries but to anyone that is suffering from a sickness that is easily treated in another country, and so, is available to the ill. Overall, an improvement in health and educational statistics of the country is expected now since better health care utilizing modern, more reliable medical equipment is present (Steve). Globalization also results in agricultural enhancements. Thanks to research and studies done, crops can now be grown without the threat of lost to disease or by any other means mainly due to genetics improvements. The crops that are genetically modified are able to have resistance to pests and diseases and hence have more fruition. This means they can also be grown when in scarcity instead how having to wait seasonally for the optimum climatic conditions which are different worldwide since we have various climate regions such as the tropics within the Caribbean islands and temperate regions present in North America and Europe. The climates produce different soil types that are crucial in growing these crops so a country in a tropic region may not be able to cultivate and harvest a crop that favors winter surroundings and as a result the country may decide to import it for price rather than spending a lot of money to research and make it possible to grow it by themselves leaving importation as a cheaper mean. Since the Caribbean region is categorize under a tropical climate the importation from more international countries with different climatic environment is expected so this would have not been possible with only integration between the Caribbean countries this is why we should partake in global markets rather among ourselves to be opened to more opportunities. Importation also presents a transportation problem between both countries. Since fruits and vegetables expire quickly, they are treated with safe chemicals to slow down the ripening process as well as repellents for pests, so they can arrive in a consumable state done by agricultural corporations experts who places a strain on local smaller business farmers that are depending on their produce for their own survivability as well as their families. Here, globalization promotes the larger companies over the smaller farmer, since they can reach foreign consumers with their genetically enhanced yield that the consumers, both the local and foreign prefers over the locally grown, non-genetically improved crops, as a result the local farmer is pressured.
There is also within the sporting industries the unification of people genres of sports that may have been culturally localized to their country and over time, develops it and introduce it to other countries to compete as well for purely entertainment, purposes govern by established organisations that enforces rules to be obeyed by all participants such as FIFA. Using football as an example, this sport was practised in nearly every country that could and eventually lead to the well know FIFA world cup competition that includes a variety of nations, composed of people of different ethnicities and background with one goal in mind, to win the world cup for their country. Globalization can be deduced as a reason for this because it brings international countries together.

Globalization Downsides

Although globalization has give us reasons to practice it, it also carries it’s significant reasons to critique it as well. When multimillion companies purchase their proprietary materials, it is subject to taxation by governmental organizations such as the IRS, internal revenue service. They are basically responsible for how their respective country generates income by companies and people sacrificing a fraction of their salaries for the nation betterment and they also enforce strict rules that is to be obeyed by everyone. There have been cases where these companies exploit and commit tax evasion crimes just to save money. This can also occur in another country that do not have resources at their disposal to confront and challenge these ‘economic giants’ and hence, suffers and is taken advantage off, all under the disguise of globalization. It is not just products that are transferred, but technologies as well. Thanks to globalization there are buildings in nearly every country that were developed and legally own by only one country at a point in time, now places like the fast foods restaurants, KFC, are available within 30 minutes of your home. Places like this offers food items for sale to the public that are unhealthy, atherosclerosis causing mainly, with overuse and factors in to the nation’s health statistics. People should then use these places in moderation by choice regardless of the never-ending advertisements seen worldwide with technological aid, the internet. The most common product of globalization is the job losses happening as a result of labor exploitation or even the threat of it as well as pay cuts. The middle class workers are people with families living solely on a base salary working for a company and will feel the brunt of being unemployed, so under threat, they remain copacetic and just barely survives because they cannot compete in the globalization ‘game’. The World Trade organization is responsible for preventing this, in addition to ensuring the trade process flows smoothly since it encompasses the bulk of the nation’s trading countries. There is also GATT, general agreement on tariffs and trades, that encourages countries to partake in worldwide trading by eliminating taxes or tariffs, which is an eye catcher and so, a major advantage to most countries. There are also anti-globalization groups that believe globalization does more harm than good. They are groups from worldwide that over the years, have increased in protesting movements from Seattle to Genoa and even Washington DC, voicing their opinions of the negative effects of globalization in terms of the political, social, economic, cultural views and even the environmental point of view. They have the collective belief that globalization intensifies capitalism which in turn, affects us (Latin America Transformed: Globalization and Modernity ).

Globalization Should Occur Worldwide Rather Than Be Limited To The Caribbean Region

To conclude I believe that we could change to eliminate the disadvantages presented by globalization so we can aspire to definitely become citizens of the global village since a much more diverse well of opportunities is out there. However, it will take time throughout this globalization era for us to get there. Caribbean integration was a success for growth and development of our own ‘neighbors’ and ourselves, nevertheless, imagine what we can do with access to technologies from more, well developed countries and who knows, we may even be able to help them. Globalization carries risks but nothing in this world is perfect so as people our job is to come together and all communicate and trade with each other for our communal growth and benefit.
