I was lucky enough to be able to spend time at Valley Center High School. I spent time in the following classes: Chemistry 1, Physical Science, English, US History, and World History. For the most part the students were 9th and 10th graders, with a few 11th graders for good measure.

Student-teacher and student-student interactions

Sitting in with three teachers I was able to see a very different teaching style from each. As well as a different type of student interaction. For example I noticed that the male teacher was much more relaxed and had a lot more fun with students and they with him. The female teachers were more straight and to the point.
Students with each other seemed to be the typical jolliness that I would expect from teens. I saw very little PDA, which honestly seemed to surprise a bit---maybe my school was just touchy feely!

The school as a whole was very secure. Which seemed to surprise me just a bit. Maybe it has to do with the times we live in or the fact they had a safety issue last year. I was asked for my ID when I walked in. All the teachers kept their doors closed and locked, during classes. The only exception was during pass periods, the moment the bell rang, doors closed. Staff and students were very friendly, admin were always in the hall first thing in the morning.

Interesting experiences

So many interesting experiences! A couple things that struck me as unique, were the fact that they say the pledge in the middle of the day--this is when they have seminar and also each teacher let the kids pack up 2 minutes before the bell rang. Students were literally waiting at the door!
Non school things that I noticed were that clothing styles really come back around! There didn't seem to be a lot of worry about the dress code--maybe I am just old and don't realize that the world has changed! Remember the chain wallets that were popular in the 90s? Kids wear their keys on lanyards that dangle from their pockets in the same sort of way. that just made me laugh!

I can't believe I am going to say this "out loud," but this experience made me realize I might want to teach high school! Some things that I will take away for sure are: having fun in the classroom, decorating the room in your personal style--it's your home away from home after all, and the idea that flex seating works--students seemed way more engaged when they were allowed to be comfortable!
