Nelson Mandela, also called Madiba by South Africans, was a great leader who brought peace and freedom to his country. He was born in 1918 into the royal family of the Thembu tribe. He went to schools that followed the British education system, but as a Black South African, his rights were very limited (restricted).

Mandela became a lawyer and joined the African National Congress (ANC), a group that fought against apartheid (a system that separated people based on race). At first, he believed in peaceful protests, but when the government used violence (hurting people), he helped create the ANC’s armed (military) wing. In 1962, he was arrested and later sentenced (given a punishment) to life in prison in 1964. He stayed in prison for 27 years but never lost hope.

In 1990, Mandela was finally released, and he worked with the government to end apartheid. In 1994, South Africa held its first election where people of all races could vote, and Mandela became the country’s first Black president. He worked hard to bring peace and unity (togetherness) among people.

After stepping down (leaving his job) as president, Mandela focused on helping people. He worked to fight against HIV/AIDS, a deadly disease. He also spoke about world problems and believed the United Nations (a group of countries working together) should solve conflicts (fights and disagreements) through peaceful talks.

Mandela believed that leaders should not stay in power for too long. He respected all religions and said that believing in a higher power (God) is important for many people.

During his long years in prison, he found strength in a poem called Invictus, which had the famous lines:

"I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul."

Even though he was a great leader, Mandela wanted to be remembered as a simple human being, with both strengths and weaknesses (good and bad qualities). His life continues to inspire (motivate) people around the world to fight for justice (fairness) and peace.

He got imprisoned for 27 years for going against the government but did not let his hope die. In 1990, he was released and four years later, he became the country's first Black President. He worked very hard to bring peace and equality in the country and got succeed in it as well. He had also spoken about world problems and had believed the act of non violence. Such great deed and sacrifice of Nelson Mandela will always be respected and remembered.

Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela was born in 1918. He was the son of a member of the royal house of the Thembu tribe. He received a good education from a British school and was taught to be a "Black Englishman" because Black South Africans who spoke good English were highly regarded.

However, he did not receive the same freedom and facilities that were given to others by the British, simply because he was Black. Unable to tolerate British dominance, he joined the African National Congress (ANC) to fight against discrimination between White and Black people, aiming for a peaceful resolution without violence. But the government did not agree with his views, and he was arrested in 1962. He was then kept in prison.

After 27 years, he was released. However, he did not change his goals. He represented the ANC in negotiations with the government, which led to South Africa’s first democratic elections, open to all citizens. After winning the election, he became the President of South Africa in 1994.
