Having visited all those exhibitions, galleries, museums and art collection really inspired me to generate my ideas for this project. But I think the one that was most significant to me was Quadrinhos in MIS. This exhibition explored almost everything there was about the comic universe. I liked how they started by telling the beginning of comics in history and how they contextualized before showing the comics that are present nowadays. The exhibition also presented the criative process in making a comicbook, like sketches, lineart and how the characters evolved during this time. The guided visits were nice because I didn't have any idea of collectors or gallery curators, so it was eye-opening to see that there are people who like collecting expensive art for a living. My Pecha Kutcha presentation had lots of generic research and places that I had visited, but It lacked the story that I want to tell. I was too focused on how I was going to do the project and forgot about the problem that I want to solve.

I chose the problem that I am going to solve: how to translate emotions into a visual language. The title is: Unaware, because emotions are feelings that we sometimes can't control and are always present, and I wanted an abstract and short/impactful title.
Today we finished the project proposal which included the project brief and the action plan. I brought an initial copy of my brief to get feedback before concluding it, and I was glad that I did that because Cezar helped me a lot. I had made the Project Concept too specific and he helped me to give the text a more broad and a "not-commiting" way to explain it. He also told me to put some older references so that my context has a broader time period, so I entered some well-known artists from the 19th century that had made projects with the theme emotions.

Today I watched 3 episodes of Aaron Blaise character design course. I took notes of the most important things that I didn't wan't to forget. This course is a real eye-opener because there are little details in character design that I was not aware of. Like how simplifying expressions can be better than trying to do it very complex. I also realized that this course is quite big. Each of the episodes are 1 hour long and there are 23 in total. I was planning to see this course in 2 days, but I may need the rest of the week for this. I will change and adapt the action plan accordingly. I was also planning in seeing if there were any exhibitions to see or events to visit. Other than Festival de quadrinhos that is already in my action plan, I have found an Art fair that is being held this weekend, it is called "Printa-feira" and I think that it will give me inspiration on different styles of print-based outcomes I can create.

Seen more 2 classes of Aaron Blaise. There was one class that was about eyes, and he said that the anatomy of the eye and everything in general is very important. He always thinks on how the skull works and how the eyes lay on the head. I think its interesting how he started the course. First he talked about the importance of research and having a very good anatomy influences on a character design. He also said to do as much life drawing as possible, so I am now trying to incorporate more life drawing in my everyday life, even in my classes, I am trying to draw the teachers and the students.

Today we had a great lecture by Charles Watson. What I liked in his lecture was its structure: he started by telling us different stories, about bacterias, evolution and each of them were pretty interesting but I wasn't quite sure what the main point was until the middle of the lecture. He talked to us about the importance of producing a lot of content and also making mistakes. I think the content was about process and learning from mistakes and I didn't really see so much new things, but I really liked the way he spoke, making some dramatic pauses and capturing our attention. He also gave lots of video examples from different sources, like commediants, science and the art universe.

Today, I researched about animations, movies and artists that had emotions as a theme. I also reasearched about emotions and the human unconsciousness. I found a documentary to watch about the subject. I think everything is according to the action plan except for the course that I will need the weekend to finish.

This weekend I visited Printa-feira that was being held at Sesc 24 de maio. I was impressed on how many artists use xilogravura/woodcut (the theme of the fair was wood). I looked at all the tables and there were so many different styles of art: there were more complexed one with lots of lines, and there were also very simple and minimalist ones. There were also artists that used vibrant colors and gave a much modern taste to the zines/posters.

Today we had a lecture from Olivier Tossan, that has worked for Dreamworks Animation. I really liked his lecture because he showed lots of his work. And since I want to be a visual development artist or character designer, I was very focused throughout the whole lecture. I liked how he was very resilient and confident in his work, like when he said that he spent one whole year sending emails and not recieving feedback to then get a call from the studio. I think I would probably give up after one month of trying. The lecture taught me to persist and to always draw and research.

New strategies for research: comment on animations that I have seen during the week and what they have thats interesting. Put some artists that inspire me, that don't necessarily have to do with animation or character design. Search for the history of animation. Types of animation. See lots of animations and short-films. And always comment and analyse them.

Today I was planning on doing some detailed research on comic books, but after I had the Research crit, Cezar changed my mind. Now I will be working on researching more about Emotions in general and wherever it is present. My reserch wasn't very broad so I will be looking in other areas other than animation: like music, sculptures, books... Today I realized that context can be anything, not only art related, so I found the research task very important because of the feedback.

In the afternoon, I looked some images to put on my wall, since that was also something that needed more attention. I printed some pics of the research week to put in my sketchbook as well.

My action plan has changed a bit since the first day I made it, but I think it is important to adapt to the different circumstances. So this rest of the week, I am fully going to research more about emotions, and how they are present (different midias). This will give me a better contextualization of the subject that my project is about.

SMART: glue all research either on the wall or in sketchbook. Do some more general research about emotions and analyse with detail.

In the morning, I did exactly as planned and looked into emotions in a broad way. Today was the last day to research emotions in general, according to the action plan. I also had an 121 tutorial with Lauren and it really helped me to view my project in a different way and now I know what I am going to work on next week: creating my narrative and experiment with different aesthetics. This was very helpful because I am pretty bad in dealing with long term projects. She also gave me good reference for me to research.

In the afternoon, we had our Research and Reflection Crit with both pathways. It is interesting how comunication students think on big and public-envolving projects. This feedback opened my eyes to that I wasn't analysing that much. I thought that I was and that I was always relating it to my project, but they said it lacked these analysis, so I am now going to be more careful with that. I also have to Harvard reference my entire research. I didn't know that, but I guess Michael mentioned this but I forgot. I think the most important thing that I got out of this Feedback was the references and suggestions the group gave me. One that I liked most was the use of textures that reminded people of the feeling for my zine, like in children books. I recieved a Merit for reflection, but looking at the others, I think I can say more about how I feel in the moment and how I can explore more in my projects.

I tried to think where emotions are present in other areas of our life. I found connections in music and movie. I added them to my Research Padlet. It is important to have a broader understanding of emotions, so that when I do my animation I don't do anything too obvious or remake things that I have already seen. I want to make something innovative and that people can relate, that is why I am searching about the theme with a wider perspective. Throughout these days I also watched the movie "Inside Out" for the third time. For me, this animation was a very significant one and a very complex idea. The main characters are emotions that are inside Riley's mind, and it was a different character perspective from what is normally shown in a narrative.

SMART: review action plan. This week I will be focusing on writing my narrative and experimenting with different drawing styles and formats for my comic book.

Today I made a rough idea of my narrative. It is going to be about a little fox girl that suddenly wakes up in the woods and is lost. All she has is a map. During her journey she encounters magical creatures that are personifications of emotions. They appear when she feels that emotion. In the end, she goes to the end of the map, and into a door. As soon as she passes the door, she awakens from a coma. She had been in limbo all this time and had suffered a terrible car crash that had made her go into that coma. The end.

I am glad that I figured out the narrative and through out this week I want to make it as detailed as possible and start thinking about the characters.

I also started making the little fox girl. I experimented with a black paint-pen, and it gave a good grey shade to the drawing. I am still going to test out more materials to find the one that suits it the best.

I realized it is a big task and a very complex one. I am happy that I did this, even if it didn't meet my daily goal. I still think that I am on track with the project.

I also made one more character and modified a bit of the main character. The character that I made is based on a Quokka animal. He is considered to be the happiest animal on earth because he looks like he is always smiling. I took this information so that it would be the inspiration for my joy character.

I did use gouache paint to paint some sketches, but I found it a bit difficult to make a good colour pallet and not a childish one. (By childish, I mean blue sky and green grass like turma da Mônica). The story is not for children, so I hope I can make a pallet that doesn't remind people of children comic books.

I have planned to finish my narrative by the end of the week, so that in the next week I will be experimenting with colours, go to more detailed character design, environment design and storyboard.

PM: Work on improving the research padlet.

What I accomplished today? I finished my entire narrative, so that I can work on environment art and character design next week. I also did start two characters as planned. Very productive day today.

My biggest achievement till now was to finish the narrative. I think it is a really good story because I kinda felt emotional when I was writing the story near the end. To have finished the story is a very big step, because now I only have to think about the characters and the drawing process.

So far, what I think I need to improve is making the scenes in a more accurate way. I think I still need to make the characters so that they are very memorable and simple, but very unique.

For my next tutorial, I would like to have made my three basic environments and have a format to work on.

Today we had a surprise group crit. Cezar said that Michael had told us Friday, but no one was aware of it. I guess it was interesting to see how everybody was doing in the project, but I honestly thought it took too long, it could have been only half the day. Compared to what I wrote to Helena, Bia wrote me this very short feedback, but its mostly because we kept arguing on why the main character is a fox, but I am happy that I at least got one reference from Len. According to Cezar and Artur, the fox represents a traitor, and the main character can't be a fox.

I researched more about foxes and I found out that they are benevolent creatures that are only more aware of the surroundings. They are also extremely independent, so I think the character matches with the fox personality. (There is more about this fox research in the Research Padlet).

I think I should already think about the format, but still think its too early to think about the printing techniques. I think the graphic part needs to be after all the pages of the book are done. Because there is no point in going after a printing price, if you don't have the PDF document to show what you want to print.

SMART: AM: make one scenery with gouache paint. Explore the possibilities of this environment with sketches.
PM: finish one character concept.

Today was a productive day, because I did exactly as I set my targets, and even a bit more. I made a scenery of the mushroom field, that is one of my scenes in the story. I started by doing some sketches and researching some mushrooms and mushroom houses in pinterest. I also thought of a pastel colour pallet for the environment. I did a few mushroom houses with details like stairs, doors and windows, in my sketchbook. I liked how the black fineliner looked, but when I colored it, it was just too much information and too much colors, it looked like a rainbow children book. I tried to fix it with some colored pencils, but wasn't that proud of the result. So I researched "pastel forest" on Pinterest and it showed me some pictures of Photoshoped forest pictures. They all had blue, pink and violet as a colour pallet, so I made another drawing, much simplified, using only those colours. The results were quite nice, but I still don't think its 100%. I think it lacks perspective and depth.

Environmental design isn't one of my strengths, so this week I plan to look at some tutorials about this topic.

My action plan has modified almost completely since the beginning, and I think that is OK, because I am modifying it accordingly to my needs. For this last experimentation week, I wan't to focus on character design and environmental design, so that next week, I can start making the pages to my comic.

Today I researched more about how big studios work on character designs. I found this really good post on Facebook that showed approximately 300 pictures of character designs for the movie "The Lion King". I am going to put them on my research padlet. What I found interesting about those images is how the characters go from very similar to the animal form and then little by little gets a different and more characteristic form. They make lots of experimentation, almost all characters go through 10 different design until they get to the main one. I wasn't aware of this process, because when I see concept art, normally they show only one experiment and tben the real one. So this was really eye-opening for me.

I also read a bit of the book "The art of League of Legends. League is a very popular online game and I personally love it, because they created a whole universe filled with detalied stories about all characters present. What I learned was that they all look at lots of reference and even the guns they use go through different concepts. But I liked how they got the idea of the character, it is a very spontaneous way, they just think about something the character can do, and they they work very hard to get the idea out of their heads and into paper.

I also looked more into an event that is going to happen this week. The "Festival de quadrinhos" is going to have lots of brazilian comic book writers and I am going there to look more into comic books, like their formats and material.

In the weekend, I went to visit Festival de Quadrinhos that was being held in São Joaquim, next to Liberdade. I imagined it was a very small festival, but I was surprised to see lots of artists and writers. I looked especially at the formats and how they printed out the comic. Most of them were in couche paper, and I am going to try to make it in a neater one. I realized that many of the comic books were published with an editor, and I don't think I can get one. I also saw one of my teachers there, that I had had an illustration course in January, I sent him an email asking for some tips on making comic books, because he has already made 3.

Today was Progress Tutorial day for communication students, so we had our Exhibition Preparation Workshop. The class was very quick and so was the one to one tutorial. I think they gave me good tips, like some ideas of how I can make the shelf with the comics, and to have a stack of my comics so that its looks more professional. I used the rest of my day getting ready for the Progress Tutorial tomorrow. I printed lots of images to glue to my sketchbook, put more details explaining some things in the sketchbook, like the sketches I made and the exhibitions I visited. I also prepared my Research padlet so that all the references are written as Harvard References.

Today I had my progress tutorial with Cezar and I think it was a very beneficial one, because I got a lot of tips on how to improve to achieve a higher grade. One of the things he mentioned was the paper that I was going to use. And I hadn't thought about this before. He also asked how many pages did I think my comic was going to have, and I am also not sure about this because I only scribbled out the narrative and didn't make a very precise storyboard. Another thing eh mentioned was the action plan, I was putting my smart targets of the day in my reflection but it is also important to make a action plan for the week and write it in the sketchbook. He also told me that the research had lots of context, but can be a little more broad in references. He pointed out the columns that needed more work, like the ones with the maps, emotions and comic books. He told me to focus more on the references other than the meaning, so that I show independent research. My reflection could have a bit more images, other than that it is OK.

What am I going to do?
This week I want to look for decent paper and test out some that I have at home for my watercolor drawings. If the paper isn't the best, the scan may look wrinkly and I certainly don't want that. I will also start writing my action plans weekly in my sketchbook so that there is full evidence of my work and progress. I will also research more in the points that he mentioned.

I used these days to act upon the feedback of the progress tutorial I had. I put more research in my padlet, trying to get a broader range of context. I looked for more things to put in the emotion column and I realized that emojis are a good and simplified way of demonstrating the feelings.

I thought more about the paper I was going to use, so I went to Papelaria Universitário in Vila Mariana and bought some watercolour paper. I wasn't going to buy them but I found one that was relatively cheep. I do not regret getting the paper because it will make it easier to scan the page afterwards.

I also saw two classes from Iconic Academy, one was about storytelling and creating a narrative and the other one was about how to demonstrate emotions in the drawings. The things that they said weren't new to me, like how colours effect the perspective, but it was nice.

The picture below are the missions that was in my Progress Tutorial feedback. I already acted upon the research feedback in the independent days. I disagree with one criteria asking me to redefine my question for the project. Cezar wants me to avoid the idea of illustrating emotions into character, but it is already in my brief, and I think I shouldn't change it. I have already worked using this concept as a guide. And the focus to my narrative are the characters.

My targets for today was to make two pages of my comic. I did that and I am pretty proud with the results. I think it is going good. This is the last week of experimentation but I have already started making because I think my project requires it. I need to take some time to print the comic, so the sooner I finish this, the better. I need to step up and do some over hours, because I won't finish this by next month if I only do two pages per day. I plan to make at least one page extra at home, so that I have time for everything. I do not want to shorten the story.

So today I printed out the template from the Calligraphr site and made my own font, just like in foundation 1.

It is nice to revisit some techniques that I have learned before, this means that the things taught in part 1 was useful and I can use later on.

I also worked on my project proposal and came up with this idea (picture above). I want my space to be very simple and to not resemble a shop, so I want there to be some posters with the process of the comic so that people get more interested and see all the phases the project has gone through. I also finished the whole proposal so that I can show Cezar in the 121 tutorial tomorrow.

SMART: make at least three pages of the comic book.

I guess I was inspired today because I have made five pages of my comic. I actually did that with one hour left, but I couldn't do more because I got too tired and couldn't paint anymore. So in the rest of the day, I added some things in the sketchbook, and made my action plan for this week.

My plan for the week is to finish as much of the comic I can because I really need some time to print the copies. I planned to finish at least 2/3 of the whole comic. I plan to make the animation and posters when the comic is being printed.

I think I am going according to schedule and will be able to finish with no rush. I hope the print shop doesn't take too long to make the copies, otherwise I'll make 3 copies by hand.

We have only 18 days left for the exhibition. I am starting to feel a bit anxious and overwhelmed, but I'm pretty sure that in the end, everything will go according to plan. Speaking of which, I have made an action plan in my project book for the rest of these days (pic below).

SMART: make at least 3 pages of the comic.
I was able to make 4 pages during class, but when I made my action plan, I realized that I need to be making 8 pages per day in order to be on track. I don't think that I can make them faster, so I will be working at home some extra hours. I experimented using a A5 size paper for the pages that only had one scene (I was making on an A4 paper before). This took me less work and time. I will be doing this for all scenes that take a whole page.

Today I had my 121 tutorial with Lauren, and these were the topics that came up in our talk:

Ensuring your project relates to your original proposal of "How to translate everyday emotions into a visual language?"

Defining what it is you want to communicate to your audience, what you expect them to take away from your exhibition?

Define who is your audience - age range? Who do you imagine reading your comic?

The gap between your Project Proposal and current direction can be bridged with research that justifies the decisions you've made. Look into anthropomorphism: how can you justify that this is a good way to communicate your intended message to your intended audience? What research can you find to back this up?

Research into the depiction of emotions in comic books - can you find some exciting visual representations of emotion in comic books? How can you incorporate this research into your own comic - it's a good opportunity for analysis - look at how comic artists employ narrative, sequence, panel interactions, interactive pull outs, textures, papers etc to convey emotion.

I also have a list of what I still have to do. There is lots of work to be done, but I think that if I follow my action plan, I will be able to achieve them all. I am going to use this weekend to figure out the proposal to my project, the audience and what to communicate to them. I am also going to put more research on emotion in comic books and about anthropomorphism.

Today I asked Carlos and Monique about print shops and which ones they recommend. They told me to go after Arrisca, that is nearby. It is very nice to get advice from people that have already printed there, so that there are less room for errors.

I had some time to think over the weekend and I have decided to adapt my project proposal. My initial proposal was to create characters out of emotions. I have already achieved that with the character design in my comic book. But my tutors think that I could expand this proposal and go further to push my boundaries. My new proposal is: How to make the reader feel the emotion of the story, using the structure of comic books. I have researched more about emotion in comic books (before, I had only researched the two subjects apart), and, with that, I realized that there is a time/space and a way to structure a narrative so that the emotion is more present for the reader. For example, when a scene is sad or tense, the writer will put more of the same scenes with the characters moving "slower" than usual, so that the person reading can get a sense of how the character is feeling in that moment.

Who is my audience? (Who do I imagine reading the book?)
12-25 year olds. People who are interested in indie comics, who goes to art fairs and zine fairs, to look for different artists and their works. I don't think my comic fall into the category of superhero comics.

SMART: make at least 5 pages of the comic. Read one chapter of the book I borrowed from the library.
I made the 5 pages and read half of the book. It is called "Desvendando os Quadrinhos" by Scott McCloud. It is really nice to stop working and read a bit. I still get the sense that I am being productive because I took some notes and got some names to put in my research padlet.

We had a Project book feedback today. I think I need some more experimentation, and I will be doing that after I finish all the pages.

When I got home, I started editing a few of my pages. I wrote with the font that I created for the first time. It looks like I didn't make the letters so even in size, but I like how they really look hand-made. I printed out some pages with my ink-jet printer, and figured out that I do not want to use polen paper because it has a cream colour to it that didn't make my watercolour very nice. I want to use regular white paper but not couchê. Tomorrow I will be going to Papelaria universitaria to buy some more watercolour paper and look for white papers for the book. I will also look for brown paper for the map.

SMART: make at least 4 of my comic pages and read rest of library book. I achieved my target for the day, but I will be making changes to my action plan of the month, because I didn't manage to make 8 pages per day (it is especially hard for me to work on the weekends). But after Michael showed us the calendar for the rest of Part 3, I was relieved to see that we still have nearly 3 weeks till the assessment. So I am going to plan to finish the comic completely by next week, because I only have half of the comic by now.

Today we saw our allocated spaces. I got the wall next to the window on the left side of the studio.

About my space:

Advantages: it has a very big wall, maybe I can print my poster a bit bigger, because there is lots of height space. It is very light, because it is next to a window, so there will be no problem with lighting. It wasn't in my three option because I thought it was to much for me to ask, since the wall is so big, but I am very happy with my space. The walls are already white, so there will be no big paint job to do.

Challenges: will my work look small on that wall? I may need to rethink how I will put things there, so that the wall space is very well-used. Is Vera's work going to interfere with my space? Will people know that the work is different? How will I install the TV on this wall? How am I going to hide the cable cords?

I believe my exhibition proposal has been effective. I wrote that I would like a white wall, and they got me a white wall. I also asked for a 3 m by 2 m wall, and it was also delivered.

Today, I have also done a few extra hours at home. I scanned all the pages I had made. Then I Photoshopped each page, so that the colours would match the painting. Then I put the text in Illustrator. I did that for the 25 pages I currently have.

I also bought more watercolour paper and a brown paper (kraft) for me to test the map.

SMART: AM: Group 1 crit/ PM: Jockey Clube - drawing horses

In the morning, we gathered in our group of four and went to each students exhibition space and heard about their idea. We gave suggestions and asked about difficulties that we could encounter with the space. For me, they questioned the fact that I was going to be using prit tack. I didn't really think of any other ways to hang other than with a frame before. But they gave me the idea of putting pins or magnets on the wall. I really liked this idea, and I will think more abou this when I decide how big the paper is that I am going to hang. Since I have a big wall to work with, I may use a roll of paper other than a collection of small ones on the wall. Michael also said that this would be a lot easier to measure, and I agree.

Then we showed what we had for the work, and Carlos gave great tips about the papers that I was going to print on. He said that if I went to triplex for the cover, it would probably leave bend marks, so I am going to use canson 180g. I didn't think of this before so it was very useful.

Action plan: Next week I will look at the prices for the fine art printer and for the comic books. I also plan on finishing my comic and doing my print for the box set.

Today we met our partners form the pre-foundation. I was paired with Felipe. I think this time Michael didn't really take in consideration our interests to form the pairs, because last year, when we helped Part 3, we were paired with people that liked the same things and chose the same pathway. But most of the pre-foundation students don't even know why they are there and what BA they are going to do. Felipe didn't even know that there were two pathways on Part 2 Foundation.

Other than that, I think Felipe was very eager to help. I showed him all my process, including sketchbook and watercolours. I also showed him my exhibition proposal and he looked very interested and impressed with my project. He gave me the advice to make the bigger posters to look like movie posters, so that it gets more attention. I really liked his idea, because I was planning initially on just making it a character design poster, but it would look more interesting with his idea.

I also managed to make 3 full pages of the comic today.

SMART: Make print for box on Wednesday morning.

Today did not go according to plan. I went to the print room to book Wednesday morning with Marcelo on Tuesday, and I found out that he had used my clean screen to make a print for another student. I asked him to clean it and put my drawing. I also said that Bia lend her screen for me to use for my second colour. I asked if he needed help cleaning the screens because I would need them ready to print on the day after. He said that he would do it and it wouldn't be a problem.

Wednesday morning: I came to EBAC at 10 A.M. to make my prints. Theoretically my screens should be ready and with my drawings. I arrive at the print shop and ask Marcelo for the screens, but he had only cleaned my screen (the one that I had already cleaned and he had used for someone else). Even worse, he got some stains on my screen so I couldn't use my screen anymore. 50 reais gone to the trash and it was not my fault. Other than that, Bia's screen was still with her print. I clearly got mad, because I had planned to make this print one week before the deadline but Marcelo didn't help. Well... at least I can clean Bia's screen, right? Wrong, Marcelo didn't let me clean her screen telling me that he would do it. I told Marcelo that I would be coming back Friday to make my prints. So I went to EBAC that day for nothing, wasted 2h and went home to work on my project.

Weekend: I have finished my comic. And the PDF is ready for printing.

Box Print: finally Marcelo had cleaned Bia's screen and the screen was ready to be used. I still needed another screen since he stained mine. I found a screen with no name and cleaned it up. I also made the first part of the print. It is very exhausting making 60 prints, they didn't look so good but I am surely not remaking any of them. I also do not like it when EBAC changes the rules. We were supposed to make a print with the maximum of 2 colours, but then they changed it to minimum 2 colours. This shows lack of professionalism. EBAC shouldn't be changing the briefs at this stage of Part 3, I had planned my time to make this print in one day, but now I have wasted 4 days and will need one more to finish this request. I also think that the students should not be obligated to pay for the box if they don't want to. If you want to make something universal for the students, make it for free and take the money from our monthly payments.

PM: went to Polo Printer in Morumbi to show them the project and print the copies. I am worried that I will have only one copy for the assessment. The print company requires 10 working days to make them, so I will only have them for the exhibition. I asked the company to make me a finished sample till the end of the week. I am hoping they are good with deadlines.

I am relieved that I finished my comic book, but there is still lots to be done. I wanted to finish everything before the wall painting days but I don't think it is going to be possible.

Studio is not available these days.

SMART: Finish my box print.

I went to EBAC in the morning and finished my prints for the box. It took little time, and I really liked the results. I chose the colours dark blue and orange, and I think they contrasted very well together. I only took 20 min to do this second coat, thanks to Bia that helped me with the papers and Marcelo that settled everything neatly for me to work. He also gave me a good tip on how to hold the material so that there was minimal physical effort to put in.

In the afternoon, I worked on my Research Padlet. I added some examples of emotions in comic books, that Lauren had asked me to research more about. I also analysed an online comic called Fox and Wolf, that I really like the style and story (author: xnatixx).

I also took pictures of my sketchbook. I will later Photoshop them and make my progress posters out of them.

SMART: work on preparing the exhibition space with pre-foundation student.

I was planning on painting the walls and installing the shelf today. Everything was going according to plan. And we had finished the wall completely at 1PM. I was letting the wall dry a bit, and then started helping my friends. When I came back to my space I found Vera putting more plaster on the wall. She thought that she was helping, but that wall was already finished, so we had to wait for it to dry again, sand and paint again. I was really mad at her, because she didn't even ask for my permission. She apologized like 8 times, but still, we had to put twice of effort and I wasn't able to install the shelf.

Tomorrow I will be going there just to install the shelf with Felipe, that is going to arrive around 11AM.

I remade my exhibition proposal because Michael said that the TV would look better on top of the socket. I agreed, so later this day I redrew it on Illustrator. This drawing on Illustrator really helped to guide me on the size of the posters. I had drawn them by hand in the last one, so this really gives me an accurate idea in size and shape. I will be using the fine art printer to print the A2 posters. I have already looked at their prices and I think it is worth it. Will be going to the resource center tomorrow to see how it works.

I have a problem. I have already ordered my comic books, but they won't be here on the 28th of may (the deadline). But I did ask for an example print and I am going to pick that up tomorrow in the afternoon. The making process is 10 working days and it will only be finished on Friday the 7th, second day of the exhibition, if they meet the deadline. Maybe I will only have one printed copy of the comic book for the exhibition. I really hope they can produce earlier, but my hopes are quite low. If in the end, my comic does not get here on time for the exhibition, I am planning on putting the materials I have used on the shelf next to the single comic.

SMART: make posters, print them out in the fine art printer, install the shelf and get one copy of my comic book from the print company.

Today my assistant will only be arriving at 11 PM, so I used the time that I had in the morning to make my posters and print them out using the fine art printer. I was expecting for them to already have a good paper to use, but then, I figures out that I needed to buy some downstairs. I bought the filter paper, and I think it has a really nice texture to it, and it doesn't look like a couchê shiny paper. After the printing was done, I actually regretted printing there. I didn't think the printer had done a very good job with the quality of the image. In the end, I spent nearly 80 reais with a not so good print job. I will not be using this printer again. Very disappointed. I don't have time to print another one, so this will have to do.

When Felipe arrived, we put the shelf up with the help of Marcelo. It was very simple and we got it done till lunch time.

After lunch I went to grab my copy of the comic book in the print company. I didn't really like the quality of it, but for 10 reais each, I guess its OK.

SMART: Today I was just planning to finish my simple animation and help install the TV.

The TV guys didn't really need any help, but they put the TV in a place that I wasn't really wanting. It was suppose to be in the middle, on top of the power socket, but it ended up being on the right side of my space. I didn't really mind and I just want to finish this project, so I just rearranged my posters and discarded one of my A2 posters that I wasn't so happy with the print job.

Michael asked me to take the shelf away, but I really don't think I have time for this. I really want to show my progress, so I will be using the shelf to put some progress storyboards and a few original drawings on top. Even though I didn't really agree with Michael's idea of putting a small shelf on the wall only for the comic, I went to Kalunga to see if they had any acrylic storage for A5 paper. They didn't have what I was looking for, they only had one that had 3 slots.

My animation is really simple and I was going to only make a walk cycle. When I finished the small GIF, I had the idea of turning it into a little spoiler for the comic. So I made some frames telling the beginning of the story and encouraging people to read the book. I think it turned out very interesting this way.

I filled out the final evaluation paper during the weekend, I only have to take a picture tomorrow and send it by email.

I am happy with my progress and I think I have successfully fulfilled this project's proposal.

NOT YET TASK

During these days I have managed to make 5 display options for my exhibition, and one final and improved one.

Display #1
In this exhibition proposal, I have printed out bigger posters (A3) and have chosen the most emotional and the most interesting part of the story (in my opinion). I also really like the different perspective views that I have experimented in these parts. I think the paneling in these pages reflect the sadness and "giving-up" feeling in this scene because the 2 first panels gives a sense of how small she is in comparison with the big and confusing maze she has ahead of her. Then she slowly falls down to the ground and there is a black background that is getting darker. Then we focus on her eyes that are getting teary and then she just lies down in an angle that we her from above, as if she is hopeless.
In this version, I have put a handmade sign on top that resembles the shape of a thinking bubble. It says: "What do you feel while reading this scene? Leave a feedback in the box." There is a black cardboard box that I have made with a post it and a pen on top for people to write down their comments.
On the shelf I have put two stack of comics and 2 open ones for people to read. I have also made another handmade sign to show the price. I wanted to make the sign handmade and with a bit of watercolour to get the feeling of my comic. I also like the idea of getting feedback from the visitors, but I don't think this may be the best option because people might not want to engage with that or will leave a comment like "cool" and it may not be useful for me. An issue that this display has is that there cannot be a person reading the comic and another one reading the posters, because its one on top of the other. I also didn't think of a way to display the maps.

Display #2
With this display method, I wanted to show a big part of my comic. I also didn't want to leave a part from the middle, so I chose 17 pages starting form the beginning. There is a stand with the comic in the middle of the display so people will grab it and read it. I also tried stacking my copies on the floor to see how they looked. With this display, I wanted to try something more organized and aesthetic. I think I have achieved that, but I don't think the part of the story really shows the problem I want to solve. This initial part of the story doesn't really have the emotions I would like to show and I printed them out on A4 paper, but I think the bigger one could be better for people to read. The stack on the floor doesn't really contribute to the space and leaves the comic isolated from the rest. I may be able to use this way of displaying in other projects because looking at it really gives a sense of organization, but I won't be using this for this project.

Display #3
This method uses two big banners hung with clips on the wall. I also bought a shelf to put the books. I chose this way of displaying because it is a different way of reading the comic and they are two very different parts of the story that contrast each other. The one on the right shows the sad part and the one on the left the happy part. I like this display method because of this contrast and also because of the printing quality. The paper they use to make this banner is shiny and the colours look really nice on them. There is also a box for the maps but I don;t think it fits so much with the rest of the display and people might take them, but they are actually for the first buyers of the comic. A acrylic stand for the price is also a good professional touch. I have used my font for the words, so it matches the comic and looks more integrated. I also like how the samples go on top, so people can easily grab and read. I like these banners and I may use this method of display in future projects.

Display #4
With this display I was testing out the different reading structures. I left one banner and the other side is 4 pages displayed in a diagonal form. A acrylic stand is left in the middle for people to read the sample, and the box of maps is on top of the shelf. This was an experimentation with different shapes for the wall but the lack of symmetry really bothers me. It also gives too much attention for the box of maps, so I didn't like this display method.

Display #4.2
I only changed the acrylic stand and sample, to see how it looks closer to the shelf. It stills bothers me because it seems like it is missing some parts. I won't be using this display method for the final exhibition.

Display #5
This one is another attempt on an interactive space. In my head it would work pretty well: people would get the sticker, read the information and match it, sticking it on the corresponding box. But when I asked for a friend to try it out, it turned out really easy and almost child-like. My public are not only children, so I don't want this to be so easy. The instructions were printed out using the comic's font, and the panels were stuck directly to the wall using Pritt tack. I printed out a A2 paper for one of the parts, and the print shop used a different paper from the rest, this made it look quite odd and amateur. I didn't include the maps in this way of displaying. I really like this method even if its too easy, and will be using this as a inspiration for my final exhibition space.

Final display
For the final display, I have adapted the display #5. The three parts of the story were printed out as banners so that the colour and paper quality looks better, the shelf was aligned to the last strip, the instructions were aligned to the left and the squares were more centered. I also added 3 new emotions (6 in total) so that the public has a harder time guessing them. The maps were placed on top of the comics and inside the shelf, so it looks integrated. And on top of the shelf, there were some more copies and 2 samples so that two people can read at a time. I really like how this looks very geometric and clean. And I think it was a success because lots of people were interacting and placing the stickers on the opening night. There were very different answers at the end of the opening night, which made me wonder that people feel emotions in a different way form the others. In the first strip there was a clear sign that there was happiness being expressed because almost all of the pink stickers were placed there, but the last one was so mixed with all colours that I wondered if that part of the story was confusing to them. I am very happy with the final display and was pleased to see that people interacted with it.
