Before Siddhartha Gautama became Buddha, he lived an over-sheltered life because his father believed if he ever saw the bad in the world he would abandon his destiny of becoming the next great king of what is now southern Nepal. One day Siddhartha became curious of the outside world, and demanded to see what was beyond the palace walls. His father did as asked, but planned for him to only see the young and healthy. While no one was watching though, Siddhartha wandered away and ended up passing a funeral. this was his first time encountering or hearing about death. After seeing this, Siddhartha knew he couldn't live without helping the suffering and went to practice religion. He did this for six years before his practices were too extreme, and he realised he didn't feel as if he was doing any good. One day he sat under a fig tree, meditating for many days and nights. After this he felt he had become awake from a sleep, and knew all the answers, he went on to call himself Buddha. (Boeree, 1999)

Buddha was the first of Southern Nepal to go against the normal religion and live by this 'mindfulness' mind set. He lived comfortably with no more or no less than he needed. After this people tried to convert him, by throwing temptation his way, but no no avail. He was faithful and peaceful, never fighting violently or harming others who were against him. People began to admire this calm and peacefulness and followed in his footsteps. (San Francisco State University, 2011) At the time only men were allowed into the holy house, called Sangha, and Buddha allowed them. This was unheard of in their culture as men were ranked far higher than women, this change was a big deal. He also accepted everyone from different backgrounds, wealth and nationality, he didn't care what their social status was and this was a new concept to many. The world 'Radical' itself means" 'Relating to of affecting the fundamental nature of something.' Buddha was radical when he changed the way everyone viewed each other, and the way the viewed the world. (Boeree, 1999)

Siddhartha Gautama had a peaceful mindset, and a love-not-war view on life. Before he became the Buddha, he didn't have much of a view at all, for he only saw a portion of the world, he only knew of health, youth and happiness. Later he discovered the truth, and his view was changed, he wanted to help everyone who was suffering. At the core he believes in non-violence, compassion, and freedom from re-birth. This is what is taught amongst Buddhist schools, and some of the pillars of Jainism, which is based on the Buddha's teachings. (Boeree, 1999)

Challenging the Status quo

People at the time believed in one mindset, they didn't think about mindfulness and being calm, they just thought about their lives and money. Siddhartha Gautama was also raised in an environment set up by his father that stopped him from seeing the bad in the world. He challenged what he knew to be the status quo, what his father had let him see, by leaving his duties to become a king, and instead becoming the Buddha. When he returned home a changed man, he refused to fight people who tried to get in his way, or turn him from his newfound peaceful mindset. Instead, he met them with calmness and acceptance they weren't prepared for, and eventually they began to learn from him. (Boeree, 1999)

At the time, one thing that was normal was women being ranked much lower than men when it came to status, Buddha was the first to change this. His aunt and wife asked to be allowed in the Sangha which at the time was only for men, despite what everyone else thought, Buddha let his aunt and wife become the first Buddhist nuns. This is one example of what things considered normal he changed. A few people disagreed with his newfound mindset, his cousin Devadatta for example. Devadatta felt that he should have higher or better power within the Sangha, and managed to convince a few monks to agree with his extremist ways. He even conspired with a local king to have Buddha killed, so they could take over Buddhism, they, however, did not succeed in doing so. (Boeree, 1999)

Buddha has made me realise how important being calm and mindful really is. Before reading about Buddha, and his life before becoming who he is known for, I always thought that the path laid out for you was what you should take, but Siddhartha Gautama chose the righteous path, a path he didn't fully recognise as an option until later in his life. After he became the Buddha, I learnt from his mindset and worldview. He believed everyone was equal, and everyone should be treated fairly. He also believed in peace and not war, something we should all believe and follow
