If Audri has built himself that machine, I think so. He knows all the possible failures that could occur and thus, he makes a hypothesis to have many failures and few successes. In base to my answer to the previous question I think that Audri did actual inquiry.
He was looking for a way to catch the monster and created a machine with different steps to do it. He made various attempts to catch the monster, and even a prediction of how many failures and successes he will have. In general I think he made a great job, but I think he can go a step further by looking for the flaws of his machine and try to improve them. Maybe that is his next step.

Although it wasn't shown in the video, because we were looking at the end product, the inquiry was there, I am sure, in all the what if?.. and how will I? questions he asked along the way... i.e...what piece of equipment to put in line next to continue the machine. He had an end goal and a self directed path towards it.

Yes, definitly. This is a complex inquiry though most of it was intuitive. For exmaple he had to hypethosise and test length and spiarl tightnes of plastic tubing to get the ball rolling at a velocity that would enable pressing the switch. This is what we need to strive for in the younger kids

The whole process was an inquiry into the possibility of performing a defined simple task in a complicated way of choice. Audri's hypothesis (about success rate) did not however fulfill the requirements for a hypothesis - a theoretical explanation leading to prediction of result. It was rather an estimate of a success rate of the machine without visible theoretical basis.

Definitely it's inquiry: has an orientation, a hypothesis, an experimentation part, some data interpretation and a conclusion.
Lots of teachers (that includes me) forgot that main concept: "Having fun while learning". I think what we usually do in class (abusing of traditional ways of teaching) cut these brilliant minds' (as Audri's) creativity!
I read the others' post on padlets: they all agree this kid a future scientist, I can only hope he will not meet a teacher to cut his enthusiasm for knowledge, playing and learning! Well done, kiddo!
I also would like him to know the positive attitude (regarding what he was experimenting) of all these teachers here, from all over Europe!

He made his hypothesis, he tested it out, when it didn't work, he re-examined his experiment and made the necessary corrections. he learned from his failures and incorporated that learning into his design to achieve success.

If I was his teacher I would motivate him to analyze the results of the test.
I would encourage him to ask himself certain questions, such as:
"Why was my hypothesis wrong?
Why were the results better than I expected?"
This is the most important part of the process of scientific work

This boy is really fantastic! We could ask our students to do something like that. As Maths teacher, I would explain to my students that the probability to have a success is probably less than 1/4 and Audri was quite lucky, but making more tests he can have a more precise idea of the success percentage he has with that machine.

I think there is a small difference between the problem of the black boxes and the Audri's rube Goldberg: in the first experiment the students are in front of something unknown and need to speculate and argue: this is a completed scientific approach ; in the second experiment, Audri is only in a testing phase of its assumptions of a mechanical action which he knows the goal.

I liked the way he used trying more than once, twice or more. To achieve success we have to try endlessly. However, he has his mum near him and she can help him also. That's a requisite for kids. However, as being adults we have to try endlessly if we want to achieve something. For example, I may get bad results from TOEFL exam, I may not be able to start learning Spanish yet; however, if I try more and more I would not lose anything. However, if I give up I would lose. If I have an ambition and I believe in myself, I have to make a time management. For example in 3 years time I can learn html/css/ also PHP and may start to learn ASP for CS. However, for the next week I can only take a further step. However, I may lose in some steps,; There might not an external power also to force me also. However, my ideal is enough for me. Solving a problem, i.e. getting rid of the monster, through a (looong) set of creative transfers of energy could lead to my students engaging in critical thinking about the way some inventions can make simple tasks harder to complete and appreciating the importance and usefulness of the many other (not Rube-Goldberg-like) machines in the world around us. He did it, and he did it in the COOLEST way inquiry can ever be done! He had a problem in mind, he formed a question (I'm guessing "How do we capture a monster using a Rube Goldberg machine?") he designed an experiment to answer- and the machine to conduct it, he made hypothesis on the potential of success and failure... and he went nuts when it did work! Audri had a goal: create and use a Rube Goldberg machine successfully. We don't know to what extend the actual "machine" building was done by him, but he demonstrated a good knowledge of every part, including how to spell gyroscope (my 9th graders have no clue on that!). The actual building of the machine would be more interesting than seeing it work. Oh, and by the way, hypothesizing a result based on no evidence, isn't hypothesizing. It's guessing. Sorry, but I see no evidence of inquiry learning in this video.

the big problem is that this attitude should be a part of young men during their game/spare time, but nowadays they are involved in games/activities that don't leave time to imagination and use of their minds!

Audri has built a complicated machine and wants to test it, so does some attempts to understand if it works well. I have some doubts. Certainly he enjoys himself a lot, but what is the conclusion? It was an experiment to evaluate just the probability of success or after a failure Audri improved his machine making it better working? This last case means you observe, find a problem, formulate a solution, test your solution and reflect on the new result (another failure or a success).

Audri certainly has created a form of Scientific Method in his exercise there. He has laid out what he hopes to observe. He is aware that it may not work and is open to failure and that he may need to adjust or recheck components. He repeats his testing - an important part of the experimental side of Scientific Method. And while his success comes to him a lot quicker than he anticipated he is able to reflect and conclude on his efforts. It reminds me of the saying failure is a successful way of finding out something doesn't work

I think that Audri did actual inquiry up to a point.
He was looking for a way to catch the monster and created a machine with different steps to do it. He made various attempts to catch the monster, and even a prediction of how many failures and successes he will have.

I think he can go a step further by looking for the flaws of his machine and try to improve them.

Maybe that is his next step.

I loved the way he decided to present the results and the way he communicate it.

I consider that Audri made the inquiry sucessfully. It started with the introduction to the subject, then presented each component and method, formulates the hypothesis, then the testing (if it was not sucessfull it woud be necessary to formulate new hipothesis, nevertheless it is possible to learn what does not work). Then conclusion, and finally reflextion. Good Work!

He did some steps, but the big missing part for me was his hypothesis. WHY did he think it would fail so many times? An exploration of that would show what he understands about his machine... and then lead to some science learning. If he thought it would fail because he can't follow instructions that is different than if the thought it would fail because there are small changes in the surfaces of the materials, so that they will move differently each time. I would agree with what others have said in that he doesn't give reasons why he thought it would fail so many times. A hypothesis should be predicting what will happen and giving a scientific reason why you think this will happen. It is a very broad investigation that he is doing, if it was more focused on a specific aspect of his machine and how it affected the ability to drop the trap on the monster then it would be more like an inquiry (maybe something like "how does the height that the ball bearing/marble drops affect the ability to turn on the switch?"). He could then give his predicted result in his hypothesis and explain WHY he thinks this would happen. But, more importantly, he is having great fun!
