- What were the results of the footprint calculator exercise?
My personal Earth Overshoot Day is April 1. If everyone lived like me, we would need 4 Earths.

- What was the consumption habit or activity that raised your footprint?
According to my results, food consumption. Makes sense, since I don't really eat anything that grows locally or hasn't been processed before.

- What were the main discoveries or reflections?
My main discovery was that I do not think about this on a regular basis, I'm so used to live a "privileged" life that sometimes I forget to do my part. I didn't realize my eating patterns could impact my footprint so greatly, but now that I know, I will surely try to improve.

- What are you planning to do to downsize your footprint?
Definitely buy less clothes and donate some, I found recently that I don't need as much as I thought. Also try to think thoroughly of what I eat every day, and talk to my mom and sisters about this, so we can work together to downsize our footprint.

- What other impacts besides environmental do you think your consumption habits have?
I think the fact that we would need 4 Earths if everyone lived like me, means it affects the lives of other people as well. Basically, I am contributing to the imbalance of resources and deterioration of our planet.

What were the results of the footprint calculator exercise?

The results of my personal footprint calculator were that if everyone lived like I do, we would need 6.6 earths and my personal earth overshoot day would be February 24.

What was the consumption habit or activity that raised your footprint?

I consider that the activities or habits that affect the most my footprint are mainly 3. The first being that I eat meat every single day and my food isn’t organic nor from close farms or local stores. The second is that I utilize a lot the car and usually alone and without carpool although I’m going to the same place than some people or friends that I know. Finally, the third reason is that the electricity in my house isn’t as efficient as it could potentially be.

What were the main discoveries or reflections?

I was impressed of the results as I made the same quiz in high school and my result were much slower, thus it made me reflect what exactly changed in my behavior that increased so much the results in a negative way

What are you planning to do to downsize your footprint?

I intend to reduce certain behaviors such as utilizing the car multiple times a day and when going to places or friend’s houses try using carpool, also I’ll try to reduce the daily meat consumption with the help of a nutriologist to not hinder my health. Regarding the other cases, there’s really not much I can do, as I still live under my parent’s roof but surely when I move out i’ll try to reduce my carbon footprint.

What other impacts besides environmental do you think your consumption habits have?

I think that as we live in a capitalist society, the impact doesn’t only affect the environment but also the life of all the workers that produce the products I consume or use daily. Take as an example, fast-fashion workers that live in inhumane conditions and have extremely unfair wages and people who buy clothes from those stores, including myself, are contributing to such inequality.

Thus, I reflected upon this situation and I’ll try to change since they depicted it with slaves which makes it even more impactful than the ecological footprint.

What are you planning to do to downsize your footprint?

I intend to reduce the daily meat consumption with the help of a nutriologist to not hinder my health, as mentioned before in the ecological footprint Q&A (as apparently it affects both) and I’ll try to avoid making unnecessary purchases of clothing and technology. What were the main discoveries or reflections?
That even though I do try to be careful about my consumption of food, services, and other kinds of products, my footprint is still very large, and that is concerning.

4. What are you planning to do to downsize your footprint?

I'm going to use more the school transport to get to school and back home, as well as carpool to take advantage of a car, or use public transport when I'm by myself. I will also try harder to eat less animal products.

5. What other impacts besides environmental do you think your consumption habits have?
First of all, I believe that consumption of clothes (specifically of fast fashion) can be extremely detrimental to third world countries' economies and to their population suffering from labor exploitation. This also affects Mexico's economies, because when we look for the cheaper prices or easiest access we tend to not buy local, therefore Mexico's industries and economy can't grow.
Besides, overconsumption can cause health problems too, both physical and mental. For example, Driving to school in a personal car, by myself, adds not only to pollution, but also to traffic, which causes insane amounts of stress for me and for the rest of people stuck in traffic.

I believe that it is due to the fact that I own my own car therefore I usually don't take public transportation, the average kilometers I travel per week is 300 kilometers and although I occasionally carpool it is mostly for my personal use making a considerable increase in the number because of the carbon emissions produced by the car.

1. What were the results of the footprint calculator exercise?

R: The results of my Ecological Footprint shows numerically my carbon and ecological footrprint in order to give a direct total of my Carbon Footprint (which in my case has a total of 50%).
First, from the pie chart it can be seen that my Carbon Footprint occupies the largest percentage of the total impact by land type. Following this, farmland is where my lifestyle carries the greatest weight, prior to forests. The land occupied for grazing, on the contrary, is the one that suffers the least impact as a consequence of my habits.

2. What was the consumption habit or activity that raised your footprint?

R: In terms of consumption, food ranks first on the chart and the goods and services that I use day to day are next. Finally, there is my form of transportation and housing. As well, the tendency that I have in relation to the goods that I acquire is high, which indicates that my consumption in this area (which sometimes does not result in anything necessary to lead a full life) damages the Earth too much, in such a way, that doesn't allow it to regenerate as it should.

3. What were the main discoveries or reflections?

R: First of all, it establishes that we would need 5.9 planets to be able to survive if everyone lived based on a lifestyle like mine. Only by knowing that, it is impressive how much impact my everyday habits have on the planet without noticing. For example, food, in my case, is the consumption category with most impact, meaning that my diet is not sustainable at all.

4. What are you planning to do to downsize your footprint?
R: From these data, I can come to the conclusion that I lead an irresponsible lifestyle. Perhaps the habits that I consider part of my routine and that before did not have any importance in the way in which I thought they could impact the environment, are now my main responsibility to improve. First, you need to be aware that every action you take leads to a significant impact. My decisions, from food to the way I transport myself, are key to lowering that number that appeared on the screen when calculating my footprint. Likewise, meditating on the way I consume daily in each area of my life is essential. I need to change my habits related to the use of electricity in my house; reduce the waste that I generate, as well as the products that I purchase; replace certain foods in my diet with others; but above all, find out about ways to live sustainably in order to spread and inspire those around me to start doing it together. This is becasue the calculateor explains that a person's Ecological Footprint includes both their personal habits and those within a society, meaning that the focus is on changing from the personal to the social.

5. What other impacts besides environmental do you think your consumption habits have?
R: The impact of our Ecological Footprint is not only environemntal related but socially and in a personal level too. For instance, this indicator is closely related to dehumanization because it is a sample of why we are losing our own humanity that identifies us. It is a proof of the bad attitudes we have been takening towards a planet that sustains us. The numbers are the reflection of a selfish truth that is a narrow consequence of our own ambition.

Moreover, I can try to reduce the ways that I go with car and instead take the bus more often.

What other impacts besides environmental do you think your consumption habits have?
Actually, it may also have negative social aspects on people in third world countries. When I consume products here, I sometimes may not be fully aware under what kind of conditions these have been produced. Moreover, I participate in the emission of 7.7 tons of CO2 per year.
The consumption habit that raised my footprint is about my mobility and the transports I use. Indeed, I often take the car and I took the plane few times last year.
I discovered that my way of life and of consuming has impacts on the planet.
I used to think it was only big companies and corporations that polluted, but I am now aware I am also part of the problem, especially regarding my transportation habits. Therefore, I am planning to take more public transportation (especially while traveling all over Mexico!). I also will be more careful about the clothes and food I buy.
I think that my consumption habits lead my friends and family to do the same. If I changed, maybe it would encourage them to change their habits too as they would see change is possible. Moreover, my consumption of meat (even though I do not consume it on a daily basis) encourages intensive agriculture and animal suffering.

In a way, it helps me cope with my problems sometimes. I always say that if I feel good, I'll be good.

What were the results of the footprint calculator exercise?

My results are not very good. Indeed, according to the simulator if all the world population lived like me we would need 3.7 Earths. And my personnal earth overshoot day is the 7 april. .

What was the consumption habit or activity that raised your footprint?

It is my housing that increases my ecological borrowing and more broadly my carbon borrowing is very important in my footprint.

What were the main discoveries or reflections?
I am really shocked by these results. Indeed, I have always considered myself an eco-responsible person and yet my lifestyle is not exemplary according to the simulator... In addition, this quiz allowed me to realize my impact on the hearth. Faced with this awareness I think drastically changing some of my daily activities. I can’t think of myself as an ecologist and consume so many land resources.
What are you planning to do to downsize your footprint?
First of all, I will ask Mexicans or owners to find places to buy vegetable proteins and address names of vegetarian restaurants. I would like to consume meat in France, which is maximum once a week.
In addition, I know that unfortunately I have not taken enough clothes in my suitcase, so I will have to go buy it but I forbid myself to go shopping in fast fashion stores, I will try to find it’s second hand stores.
At last, for two weeks I’ve been here, I’ve been taking the Uber to go to the TEC as I live 30 minutes on foot. Therefore, one of my commitments will be to go to school on foot and use the Uber only the day it is night when I leave class.

What other impacts besides environmental do you think your consumption habits have ?

In the first place, I try for several years to consume less new clothes and fast fashion because indeed I know well that there are many people who work in miserable conditions: too many hours and underpaid. The consumption of this type of clothing plays a negative role on the environment but also human rights and created slavery.

Apr, which means that by this date, we would have used as much from nature as Earth can renew in the entire year. In 2020, Earth Overshoot Day for humanity is August 22. As well, if everyone lived like me, we would need 3 Earths.

What was the consumption habit or activity that raised your footprint?

Food, since my Meat Consumption is high.

What were the main discoveries or reflections?

The main discoveries that arose from the test was that my Ecological Footprint is 5 global hectares (gha), which implies that I use more than what is available (1.7 gha). As well my Carbon Footprint (CO2 emissions in tonnes per year) makeup 6.6 tons per year and represents 46% of my total Ecological Footprint.

What are you planning to do to downsize your footprint?

Support sustainability policies since 70-80% of the world’s population is expected to live in cities by 2050, smart urban planning and development strategies are crucial to managing our resources. Also the use of sustainable energy is crucial to downsize my carbon footprint, since renewable energy is a direct path to reducing your Ecological Footprint and addressing climate change.

What other impacts besides environmental do you think your consumption habits have?

My consumption habits have an economical impact on the local economy, mainly in my food consumption, but also the services that my family uses in our shelter. I live in a house which is not well isolated and which does not make use of renewable energy.

What were the main discoveries or reflections?

The main discovery I did during the ecological footprint calculator was how much worse the house were I live in is compared to my neighbors for example. We produce way more waste than I expected. Next to this is the Carbon Footprint really high, which was mainly due to the shelter.

What are you planning to do to downsize your footprint?

We should, as a house, buy groceries together to minimize food waste. Next to this, we should make sure to use the electriticy as less as possible, turn off air conditioning and lights when not at the house. Finally, the use of meat should be limited to a maximum of 2 times per week instead of almost every day.

What other impacts besides environmental do you think your consumption habits have?

There is for sure a social impact as well, people in third world countries have to work many hours for very little money for the products we eat or use daily.

How many slaves work for you?

There are 46 slaves working for me.

What was the consumption habit or activity that raised your footprint

I think the biggest part is the food I eat. I eat a lot of fruit and herbs which are not locally produced. Next to this I have too many electrical devices and clothes which are produced in countries where people do not or very little get paid for their work.

What were the main discoveries or reflections?

That I should really check whether the products and food I consume are ethically produced and that people are getting paid for their job.

What are you planning to do to downsize your footprint?

Check were the product is made and also buy more locally produced products. Next to this I should do some research on how you can conclude a product is made with fair rights. Furthermore, paying a bit more for a product can also help to downsize your footprint.

What other impacts besides environmental do you think your consumption habits have?

There is definitely a social impact with this footprint. The products I buy which are cheap and easy to get, are made by people who get no or very little money. They have to work the whole day and do not benefit at all by the work they do.

What were the results of the footprint calculator exercise?

My overshoot day is March 02 and if everyone lived like me we would need 5.9 Earths. I have 37 slaves working for me.

What was the consumption habit or activity that raised your footprint?

The consumption habit or activity that raised my footprint is the emission of Carbon dioxide pear year. Mobility is the main reason of this increase, my consumptions in goods are low, and I don’t contaminate that much to satisfy my basic needs. Nevertheless, I have a car of my own. I use this method for transportation. Also, I travel a lot of miles per year.

What were the main discoveries or reflections?

I got shocked about my results because I use to have an idea of how much my footprint could be, but never imagined this big. My main concern is about mobility. Where I live, transportation is a huge problem since there are not many options you can take to move around the city. Even though we do have public infrastructure, using this means of transportation is not so safe at all. Also, traffic jams in the city are crazy, to travel 10miles in a normal day you can take around 30min to 1 hour and a half to reach your destination.

What are you planning to do to downsize your footprint?

I’m thinking about trying to use less the car for short distances. Share my knowledge and concerns with my close ones and manifesting the government for smart urban planning and development strategies, since there are not many politics around sustainability in my country. Also, an electric car might do well.

What other impacts besides environmental do you think your consumption habits have?

Other impacts besides environmental are noise pollution, water pollution, visual pollution, and heat pollution.

What were the results of the footprint calculator exercise?

According to the footprint calculator exercise, if everyone was living like I am, we would need 1.9 planets to survive a year.

What was the consumption habit or activity that raised your footprint?

The consumption habit that raised my footprint is definitely transportation, since I took the plane to arrive in Mexico and even if I want to reduce its use, it was only one of the many times I have taken it in my life. In addition, for my studies in France, I was used to going back home every month, and even if it was by train, it still had a significant impact on my footprint.

What were the main discoveries or reflections?

I was kind of surprised by the ecological footprint I had because of trains, since I considered it as the less problematic mean of transportation regarding CO2 emissions and it still represent a big part of my footprint. Moreover, even if it is definitely not as consequent as transportation, food is third highest productor of CO2 (after State’s services). Thus, it makes me think of the impact that I still have by eating eggs and dairies, and if it would be possible de reduce their consumption in addition to being a vegetarian.

What are you planning to do to downsize your footprint?

I am planning on reducing my ecological footprint by drastically reducing taking the plane to travel. I don’t want to take it anymore when it comes to travelling inside Europe, and it would be more sustainable only to travel a few times in my life, through longer trips, to other continents, instead of smaller trips more often.

What other impacts besides environmental do you think your consumption habits have?

My consumption habits have obviously other impacts, such as social and ethnical. Indeed, consumption is clearly linked to questions of work conditions, equality between populations, animal treatment and plenty of other thematic that must be taken into consideration in the analysis of our habits.

Also, another reflection will be that I need to start being more conscious about how much meat I eat since I didn’t realize the impact that meat and its production had on the environment and principally climate change.

What are you planning to do to downsize your footprint?

One action that I can take will definitely be to start looking for a different type of diet that include less processed foods and more locally produce products in order to lower my footprint, also regarding to transportation I will try to convince friends to do carpooling in other to reduce our footprints.

What other impacts besides environmental do you think your consumption habits have?

I think other impact it could have would be financially, considering the costs of gas and processed such as meat, eggs, or milk.

What were the results of the footprint calculator exercise?

My personal Earth Overshoot Day is on April 28 and if everyone lived like me we would need 3.1 earths.

What was the consumption habit or activity that raised your footprint?

Mobility was the category that raised my footprint a lot. When in Germany, I usually always go by bike, walk, or use the tram in the city where I live in. But I also commute to another city by train once a week which is quite far and use a car every second weekend or so to visit my parents.

What were the main discoveries or reflections?

I had to think about how my mode of transportation changed since staying in CDMX. My favorite way to go around town usually is by bike or by foot. I enjoy the movement, being outside, and know it’s best for our climate. But here distances are much further and it’s probably safer to use some kind of vehicle, especially during the night. Now, I uber a lot with some of my flatmates and also use public transport. But using an Uber/taxi when one wants to avoid the masses in the metro is a privilege not everyone has as it’s more expensive than going by public transport. So that’s also one of my reflections, that living in a capitalist system our mobility ofc depends on our economic situation, but I think it shouldn’t, or at least to a lesser amount.

What are you planning to do to downsize your footprint?

I would like to use public transport more often here in CDMX. Besides, I want to eat more vegan again and buy less packaged products like I used to do.

What other impacts besides environmental do you think your consumption habits have?

I believe that by how we consume we can set examples for others. Me for instance, I was inspired to go vegetarian and then vegan for a certain period, by a friend of mine who also did it. So, we can have a positive influence on one another and share tips and tricks. Besides this social consequence, our consumption surely affects our health, mental as well as physical. Also, our social media consumption and use of the internet have an ecological imprint and affect our wellbeing.

Unfortunately, the slavery calculator didn't work for me :/ it never accepted my postal code, although I tried various.

Back home in Sweden our car is electric and I use a lot of public transportation. But unfortunately I fly both domestic and within Europe a lot, and that is probably whats affecting my footprint the most.

What were the main discoveries or reflections?

My second highest consumption was the food one, and that made me think about what I eat. I eat meat (chicken, fish, pork or beef) in almost every meal and animal products as well. I do not think I realized until know how much of a difference a vegetarian diet can make.

What are you planning to do to downsize your footprint?

When it comes to transportation, I already prioritize using the bus or metro for school and work, which helps us reduce the energy consumed by our electric car. Sometimes I tend to travel domestic by flight due to the prices being way lower than traveling by train. But paying a little extra in order to travel with less of an ecological impact would be worth it.

What other impacts besides environmental do you think your consumption habits have?

My consumption habits, even with efforts to be eco-friendly, still have negative impacts. For instance, buying new clothes monthly contributes to fast fashion, which often involves exploitative labor practices. Even organic products can have a high carbon footprint if not locally sourced. Additionally, maintaining an electric car and a large home requires significant resources, potentially straining global supplies and contributing to inequality.

What were the results of the footprint calculator exercise?

If everyone lived like me, we would need 5.5 Earths

What was the consumption habit or activity that raised your footprint?

The biggest factor in my footprint is my food consumption, particularly my reliance on meat as a primary protein source. I enjoy sports and have tailored my diet around convenient, high-protein options, with meat being a central part of that.

What were the main discoveries or reflections?

The exercise made me realize how unsustainable my food consumption habits are. I’ve always heard that agriculture has a significant impact on climate change, but it didn’t fully register until I saw how much my personal choices contribute to it. My diet, particularly centered around meat, has a bigger environmental impact than I expected. This has been a real wake-up call, showing me that even individual habits can significantly affect the planet.

What are you planning to do to downsize your footprint?

I need to change my habits, particularly in terms of food. While the rest of my footprint isn’t too bad, my food choices, especially meat consumption, need to shift. I plan to explore other protein sources and reduce the amount of meat I eat overall.

What other impacts besides environmental do you think your consumption habits have?

Beyond environmental damage, my consumption habits also contribute to a larger capitalist system that prioritizes profits and cost-cutting at the expense of the climate. The agricultural industry, especially the meat sector, is a key part of this system and plays a significant role in driving climate change. It has also grown into a powerful lobbying force, pushing its interests and influencing policies. By consuming large amounts of meat, I’m indirectly supporting both this harmful capitalist system and the political power these industries wield, which is something I need to reconsider.

Also, realised how much the infrastructure and societal norms influence habits. In the Netherlands, cycling in any weather is the norm and very easy, while the same might not be as easily possible in other countries. I also noticed again how much flights impact my ecological footprint. As I love traveling, this number is quite high, but after now spending time abroad I plan to travel closer to home in the future.

Other Impacts
My habits have both positive and negative impacts. By eating vegetarian and cycling a lot for example I positively influence my own health and the health of others, as my habits have low pollution. However, other habits such as flying frequently have negative impacts on the environment and can also contribute to over-tourism, which strains local resources and can negatively impact local communities.

In the U.S., it’s impossible to move around without a vehicle (at least where I'm from) so I would drive for almost two hours everyday in total. Since I don’t have my vehicle with me, I’ve started walking a lot more to wherever I want to go. I figured this dropped down my carbon footprint by a landslide. I’ve also neglected my eating choices and opted to eat what was easiest to acquire, which is usually some type of dairy or meat product.

What are you planning to do to downsize your footprint?

I could begin with cooking more personalized meals at home that don’t include animal products, as well as buying less packaged food products. I figured I could also take more public transportation as I tend to opt for uber if my destination is too far to walk.

What other impacts besides environmental do you think your consumption habits have?

These consumption habits are taking a toll on my health and finances. Since studying abroad, the amount of flights I am taking has dramatically increased as normally I do not tend to take long haul flights.

What were the main discoveries or reflections?

I have realised the importance of my vegetarian diet in reducing my carbon footprint. However, I also realise that I have been using this to justify other harmful actions such as flying. The size of my carbon footprint has led me to realise the importance of consistency across different areas of my life, not just in one area.

What are you planning to do to downsize your footprint?

In order to downsize my carbon footprint, I am planning in exploring different ways of travelling in Mexico without flying. This will also be a priority, and somewhat easier, once I return to my home country. I am also considering moving closer towards a vegan diet in day to day life.

What other impacts besides environmental do you think your consumption habits have

I think that there are also definitely ethical considerations to take when looking at my consumption habits. For example, when I am consuming dairy products there are implications for animal welfare.

What were the results of the footprint calculator exercise?
My Earth Overshoot Day falls on May 8, and if everyone lived like I do, we'd need 3.5 planets to sustain us.

What was the consumption habit or activity that raised your footprint?
Transport greatly increases my footprint: in France, I take the train to see my family and get around, and my relatives use the car to take me somewhere. Here in CDMX, I walk, but the city is huge, so I sometimes take public transport or Ubers.

What were the main discoveries or reflections?
I never thought that as a student I would have such a big impact on the planet. It makes me want to change my habits to reduce this destruction as much as possible. Even though I used to walk a lot in France, it's more difficult here, but I don't want to depend on the Ubers for financial and ecological reasons.

What are you planning to do to downsize your footprint?
I plan to use the metro more in CDMX, adopt more vegetarian habits and reduce my meat consumption and be even more aware of what I consume so that I'm also able to find alternatives.

What other impacts besides environmental do you think your consumption habits have?
My consumption choices influence the human lives exploited or affected by this system. Intensive livestock farming and animal suffering are also factors that motivate me to be more demanding about what I consume, in the hope that more ethical alternatives will become more accessible.

I will also continue to reduce the amount of clothes that I buy. In general, I think reducing consumption in all areas is important as it is difficult to consume the amount that many of us do in an ethical way.

What were the results of the slave exercise?

According to the calculator I would have 7 slaves working for me.

What was the reason for this result?

I'm assuming that the amount of clothes I own was the biggest reason for this result, as well as cosmetic and makeup products.

What were the main discoveries or reflections?

I found this calculator useful in reminding me that even though it is easy to imagine so, things don't just appear to the shelves of shops for us to consume. Every single product made has impacted a person and most likely a bigger community as well. Due to excess supply it is extremely easy to consume products that are absolutely not necessary. I do notice over-consumption in my own life too, even though I try to be conscious about the things I buy.

What are you planning to do to downsize your number?

I need to be more conscious about my spending, especially when it comes to clothes.

What other impacts besides environmental do you think your consumption habits have?

As was pointed out in the calculator, our consumption habits also affect workers making the products; sometimes entire communities can be ruined due to Western consumption habits.
