Wonder is about Auggie Pullman, a ten year old boy that was born with a facial malformation. He is starting his first year of school at Beecher Prep and he is in the 5th grade. Auggie meets two new friends named Jack and Summer. He meets a bully named Julian. Julian always makes fun of Auggie, but Jack and Summer stand up for him. Halloween is Auggie’s favorite holiday because he can dress up and noone knows his identity. Jack talks badly about Auggie and Auggie over hears his mean words. Auggie gets mad and won’t speak to him. Summer eventually gets Auggie and Jack back together as friends. The three of them become best friends as the story goes on. They go to an overnight camp with the school and Auggie gets teased by older kids. There are three boys, Miles, Amos, and Henry, who stick up for Auggie and he becomes more popular and accepted. At the end of the school’s graduation, Auggie wins the award for kindness called the Henry Ward Beecher Medal.

Michael O’Shanessey is the main character. He lives in Berlin with his Irish family. Micheal does what needs to be done for the allies, which means to hide a Royal Air pilot so he doesn’t get
caught. “ I’ll hide you in the barn because we looked in there earlier and pick you up before supper.” said Michael. Michael is a very sneaky kid, this is because he hides a Jew. Ma said,” Simon get into the bunker so you do not get caught.” Michael becomes a member of the Hitler Youth as a spy. He becomes so called friends with Fritz. Fritz tells him of the plans for Projekt 1065 and Michael knows he has to do things to help get those plans to his dad. His dad is the Irish Ambassador to Germany.

The beginning of the book takes place in Krakow, Poland where Yanek Gruner lived. The place was nice but then the Germans took over Krakow and walled it in. The place turned into mayhem when the Germans came to take jews to the concentration camps. The story takes place in many concentration camps. They were old and devastated because of the Jews being there working. The hut Yanek stayed in was small with a lot of people such as a Thomas, and Lucas. The worst concentration camp was the Trzebina Concentration Camp. The prisoners suffered mentally and physically there.

Yanek was finally rescued by the American soldiers out of Dachau.

The events referenced in the book were during World War II, Maleconazo, and the Syrian Civil War. It was interesting to read about historical events that I wasn’t familiar with. “Refugee” caught my attention and the stories were engaging. I would recommend reading this book to anyone!

I give Code of Honor a 4 out of 5 stars. The story is suspenseful and keeps your attention. Code of Honor makes you think about your family and their support. The book makes you realize how people judge someone, even though they do not know the person. The story shows how much love and faith brothers have for one another.

The theme of Code of Honor is don’t judge a person by their family heritage. Kamran Smith’s mom is Iranian. “It was the first time I’d realized how hard it was going to be, growing up Persian American (Gratz 9). Kamran’s brother, Darius, is accused of being a terrorist. The brothers had always had code with each other and Kamran proved that Darius was not a terrorist. “How did you know Darius wasn’t a traitor?”(Gratz 265). In the book, an agent, Mickey, tells Kamran that some people will think less of you because of your skin color or because of your mother’s birth country. “The best thing for you to do is to keep living by that Code of Honor of yours and proving the haters wrong(Gratz 272).
